Camping food...

Recommended Posts

So I am about to be working the NASCAR event at Texas Motor Speedway and camping out for a week. I will be about 3.5 weeks out from surgery, so still kind of limited. It will just be me, so firing up a grill and stuff is pointless. Any suggestions on things to pack that are safe to eat at this point?

I would definitely take your Protein Shakes, also yogurt, applesauce, hummus (if it is ok at this point) and soup....Oh, and LOTS AND LOTS of water! Have fun and don't overdo it! :D

What stage are you going to be at? Every doc is different in their stages..

Stage 2 by my doctor's diet. Week 2-6 is the same.

Stage 2 by my doctor's diet. Week 2-6 is the same.

So stage 2 soft/purée? In that case canned beans/ refried Beans. I know you don't want to cook so hey eat them as is! you could bring tuna in the pouches or tuna and cracker kits..

Premier Protein shakes are ready made and shelf stable, you can buy those at costco or SAMs club.. I am going camping next week so a case of those are definitely coming with me!

Is that the stage you are going to be at? Purée? Soft?

Shaved deli meats also

No puree, that wasn't any part of my diets.

Stage 2 from my doc states:

Proteins - Lean soft and moist meats (fish, tuna, poultry, or pork), low fat cottage cheese, low-fat or non-fat cheese, soft tofu, eggs or egg substitute, soft low fat casseroles with soft vegetables;

Milk - Fat Free or skim, sugar free or low fat yogurt;

Fruits & Vegetables - Any fruit/vegetable without seeds or hulls that have been cooked soft. Soft unsweetened canned fruits or vegetables, fresh soft fruit;

bread & Cereals - Hot cereals cooked in milk (oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat), cold Cereal (high protein) soaked in milk, toasted bread or plain soda crackers; Other - sugar free Jello, popsicles, pudding/custard.

Problem is I won't have access to ice and stuff to keep things cold all week. I will need as much that can be stored at ambient temps as possible. That's where I'm getting lost.

Ok canned meat might be your friend! tuna, chicken, even deviled ham. I did canned sardines and clams too. Crackers are probably a good thing to buy to go with all that canned meat.

Like I said the premier shakes are key to me, they are filling, make a good Breakfast and "shelf stable"

I would cruise the grocery store and look for individual sized chili and Beans as not to go bad after you open it. Things that can be thrown in the microwave chile cups and Soups and just rough it and eat them straight. Since you can't cook anything ..

Oh and the sugar free Jello cups are shelf stable.

You can find them where they sell the dry packaged pudding. Those would work for a sweet tooth :)

Not the Jello brand, they require refrigeration. You have to go to the Hunt's or the store brand for shelf stable. I have a good supply of those already.

I'd totally be chowing down on beans! YUM.

Also canned chicken is really soft and delish.. The Walmart brand is good. There are also little cans of ham spread that you can get.

I've been really enjoying hot pickled bologna.. Not the healthiest thing in the world, but it is convenient and tasty and makes me feel like I'm having a normal snack.. and 90 calories worth has 10 grams of Protein.

Bring some shelf stable cheese wedges too.. also what about pickled eggs?

Also, if you want to heat stuff up, you can just set up a little pocket stove over some sterno.. Sterno is cheap at the dollar store and you can get the pocket stove for a couple of bucks at any outdoor supply store.. or just rig something up yourself to keep your can above your sterno flame... if you go this route, you'll also be opening yourself up to the possibilities of things like powdered eggs or instant oatmeal.< /p>

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
