Are our metabolism screwed forever?

Recommended Posts

I know eating at a huge caloric deficit makes are metabolism slow down to a crawl.

This is actually a huge myth. Google starvation mode myth and spend a little bit of time reading if you have a few minutes. Very interesting. Also, the difference between the faster metabolism people and the slower (excluding extreme conditions) is like, 200 calories a day burnt.

I am so glad to hear this is a myth from you, a well versed medical professional (even though you are just finishing school).

As I am going to push myself athletically and keep my calories around 1200 calories, I can see my BMR as being "shot." I am probably just never going to be eating 1800 or 2200 calories a day. It is not comfortable to be eating that much. I have gotten used to eating a couple 100 calories 5-6 x a day. Plus I do not want to gain back.

There is so much misinformation about how our metabolic system really opperates and its hard to dispell because its actually sort of complicated. I don't understand everything there is to know, but I do know that it's not so fragile as people would have you think. I'm going to be taking a class on it in grad school. Can't wait.

I made it my goal to not ruin my metabolism-- at the advisement of an awesome personal trainer. I eat about 2000 cals a day in maintenance now. I have for an entire year. If I creep up' date=' I cut back a bit. I got my cals up to 1200 as soon as I could post-op in an attempt to not tank my metabolism. I lost most of my weight at the 1500 calorie point. I still made goal at 8.5 months post op! I think I am able to eat a hefty 2K per day now cause I work out and stay active and cause I didn't stay below 1200 cals a day for long. My friend that had gastric bypass ate 600 cals a day for almost year so now when she started eating a measly 1000-1200 a day now she has regained 50 pounds.

Thats why I love my sleeve. I can maintain my weight now at a reasonable calorie count!!!![/quote']

Wow, how fast and how much did u lose! That's awesome!

I ate around 800-1200 calories a day while I was in weight loss mode. I get around 1500-1800 a day in maintenance, I'm 56 and I exercise at a moderate pace 2-3 times per week for 450-minutes to an hour.

my heaviest weight was 262- (I'm 5'4") I was sleeved at 250, made goal 169 8.5 months later. Total of 90+ pounds in 10 months. (very modest goal weight-- yes but I'm a size 12 and medium tops usually and I WAS a 24 and 2x tops easy. ) I will be 2 years post op a week after I turn 30 (July 25th) and my goal is to make it to the 150's (159!) by then with my new workout routine. Another positive about my modest goals is I have no loose skin. :)

Can you share what a normal eating day was for you at 1500 calories? Like what healthy meals did you eat that your were still able to consume this much. You have brought up a great concern and come to think of it the calorie increase over time is probably why so many wls patients can their weight back.

Sure!

Breakfast : 6:30 sipping / eating for 1 hour. medium ice vanilla latte from caribou coffee- not sugar free, with 2% milk and 1 turkey bacon mini sandwhich from caribou. Total: 400 cals, 20 grams of Protein

snack 9:45am : babybels cheese 60 cals, 6 Protein.

Lunch: 1 large egg made in to egg salad with regular mayo, 1 serving of cheezits. Total: 320 cals, 10 protein.

Snack: Stoney field farm yogurt- organic banana flavor - 1 cup 200 cals, 9 protein.

Dinner: steak burrito bowl from chipotle- about 2oz of steak, cheese, sour cream, 2 tablespoons of Beans, 2 tablespoons of rice and hot salsa. I figure about 350 cals and 15 protein.

Dessert/ late night snack, edys whole fruit Popsicle. 100 cals.

Very typical day- I get burrito bowls and eat them for days! And at 2000 cals I eat similar, like 2 eggs at lunch and a little more meat for dinner- and ususlly some veggies at dinner and sometimes for my afternoon snack.

Question. What's the point in getting 2/3s of your stomach cut off only to eat that much?

Question. What's the point in getting 2/3s of your stomach cut off only to eat that much?

I didn't "cut off 2/3s" of my stomach so I could eat less. I had a surgical procedure to help me lose weight and be healthy. Which I have done. I'm 20 months post op and am healthy and happy, maintaining my goal weight for an entire year.

you do realize how ridiculous this question is right?

Sleeve of Steel, thank you for posting a sample meal plan.

I'd love to see anyone else's sample day that is over 900 calories as well. My Nut wants me to eat sugar free this and fat free that. I can barely get to 700 cals a day. I do usually buy lowfat dairy but I can't shake this "diet" mentality she's got me in.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
