Hi all

I will be getting my gastric sleeve surgery in the beginning of May and reading about the diet post-op has me terrified! I am so worried that I will slip up and eat a few chips and end up sabotaging the whole process! I want to lose the weight and am determined to do it while exercising and eating right however wondering if anyone out there "slipped up" occasionally and still had success? I don't ever want to be back to my current weight but also want to be able to enjoy life and be able to someday go out with friends and family and not worry too much. Is this possible with the surgery or am I committing to a lifetime of no indulgences?

No worries here. You will not want chips for weeks post op. I had food funerals the whole month before pre op diet but when the liquid diet started I did not cheat once. This was the toughest of the diet the 2weeks pre op. in my case after surgery I did not crave any bad foods for couple months. It was great just to eat food again even if it is just an egg. By the 3rd month you may start to crave many of your old foods again but you can learn to substitute and make healthier recipes of your old favorites. It is a process and I am only 4 months post op but I could not eat anything near what I ate before or would I want too.

I'm not going to say good or bad to occasionally slip, I have found that (when people will admit it) learning about slider foods, or learning that it seems ok to slip or occasionally induldge is that crack in the closet door - does the boogey man come out or not...

Don't be afraid of slipping up, but do be aware of the possibility. Do you have a strategy to not do this? Have you got to the point that you can avoid your cravings? These are really base questions, I know...but - have you?

Beyond that, allow the fear, don't push it away - take it in, let it go...analyze it, decide upon it, finalize it - impermanence is a really valuable tool right now. It will save you many, many hours of stress.

Thanks! It is just so scary to think of this complete lifestyle change! Especially as my husband and daughter wont be doing the same diet so I want to keep their diet as normal as possible while keeping with my correct diet but not going crazy making different meals! Are you on solids now? How much can you eat at one meal? I have quite a few allergies to many of the items listen on the approved foods post-op so hoping I can get help somewhere with what I can eat that won't sabotage my surgery

You might want to talk to a nutritionist about appropriate substitutions if you have food allergies, mamaje. If you don't have one already, it might be worth the cost of an appointment to ease your mind and have some closure on that concern.

As for eventually being able to go out and enjoy things with your family and friends again, of course you will. Hopefully you will have embedded your good habits by then that you'll really want that grilled salmon with sauce on the side and the veggies that go with it, and won't care to have that giant mega-burger with 4 kinds of cheese, onion rings and a big shake. The goal is to build good habits so that if you choose to have a treat, it will be just that, and you'll do so in an appropriate way.

It really depends a lot on you, and your long-term relationship with food. For example, I don't particularly have a sweet tooth, though I enjoy an occasional small dessert or a cookie in moderation even now, pre-sleeve. I fully expect that once I get past the first few months I might have the occasional tiny piece of pie or small piece of dark chocolate, because I'm easily satisfied with just a taste. I *DO* have a problem with salty Snacks like crackers, chips and popcorn. I may never allow those back into my diet, because it just won't be worth it if they sabotage me. There are things I can substitute that will likely serve me better nutritionally and fill me up on a more appropriate serving size, like raw veggies with a non-fat Greek yogurt dip.

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
