Confused now.....

At one point my Surgeon told me he refused to do the lap band because most of his pt's have been very unsuccessful.

I originally wanted the lap band for the whole year and a half of research i had made. When i finally met with someone who went into details face to face with each surgery i realized right then and there that the band was now a second option and the sleeve was # 1.

Reasons for not choosing the Band: Its irreversible. I thought i could lose the weight and take it off but i can't. I am not crazy about having a foreign object in my body for the rest of my life. Plus the band after so long can slip or come up or other consequences i said was not worth it.

I was a co-worker who has the band and she drinks soda like nothing and ice cream. It just goes right through the band and it doesn't affect her.

And she says she lost 100lbs and gained most of of it back.

Yes I was not crazy of getting part of my stomach cut out but at the end i realized the sleeve was more ideal.

(1 week and 1 day Post-op)

I too was originally going to get the band and was until three months pre-op. I know three people with the band who had issues. Don't get me wrong, they all lost weight initially but it did not last. One had his port replaced twice, the other had built up scar tissue and port infection requiring replacement and then experienced slippage. He then had a revision to the sleeve. The third had too many issues to list. He got married, took out Fluid for his honeymoon and then to visit family and did not go background a fill. He now has 75 pounds to lose after initially losing 90 lbs. Both of the band people wished they went with the sleeve.

I initially wanted the band. Met with my surgeon at a wonderful hospital in Philadelphia and they informed me due to so many complications of the band they no longer perform that surgery there. He went into detail and then I had to reassess my decision.

I was a good candidate for the band and wish I'd have done that verses the sleeve. While they do have band complications, they are rarely life threatening which isn't the case with the sleeve. I didn't want the port and foreign object in my body and thought that filling etc would be a pain...and instead I will now end up with a port because my stomach is too small to allow me proper nutrition. Ironic huh?

Failed successes? :P Is that possible LOL Even I will say I have lost weight with the sleeve, so in the weight loss dept, no failure there, but I do regret having done this to myself. There's no going back unfortunately as there is with the band.

Last night I attended an informational session that is required by the surgeons I will be going to. I went with my mind fully made up that I want to have the gastric band surgery. After hearing the information I am leaning more toward the sleeve. But am I ready for something that drastic???

Would you guys do it again?

What made you choose the sleeve over the band?

Any failed successes?

Thank you for your help!

In a heartbeat!!! Tomorrow! Life changing. But just know you WILL have to deal with junk food and snacking down the road. It's not a "magic bullet". So glad I did it.

This topic has been fairly well covered, but I'll add my two cents... when I started considering wls, I did a google search for "successful lap band surgery" and I got zilch, zero, zip. All I read about was complications and a huge amount of vomiting. Yuck. Since I hate to throw-up I took the lap-band off my list of possibilities. I was sleeved August 2012 and I feel fabulous. I'm somewhat of a slow loser, but I've lost 65 lbs and since the trend continues downward, I am happy, happy, happy.

Good luck in your decision making process.

Had the band for four years, had a revision to sleeve March 22. Band got me to goal, in a very unhealthy way. I like my sleeve much more already! Plus my port drove me nuts!

Hmmmmmm, let's see now........everyone in the band forum likes the band.........everyone in sleeve forums like the sleeve......and all the bypass people like their bypass........ How will I ever decide.......I know.....I'll talk to my doctor and he'll help me decide what's best for me based on my individual circumstances.

Moral.......the internet and forums are not always the best place for answers. ;)

I actually strongly disagree. Obviously the OP should expect bias from each individual site, however, I think that using these individual forums to research and make a decision can be an invaluable tool. Had lap band forums been around (or had I been aware of them) when I was researching surgery in 2003, I could have browsed the complications section, like I have many times with the sleeve, to find out what the downfalls could be, and possibly avoided living the same fate myself.

Clearly anyone making a decision about ANY major surgery needs to make that decision with their doctor based on their individual circumstances. However, I think discrediting the information obtained by speaking to people that have had the surgery (or possibly even 2 of the surgeries) that you are researching, can be a wonderful place to find some answers. It helped me decide between sleeve or bypass for my revision and I am so thankful for the insight of others, both on this forum and others.

Every procedure has a risk of complications. And what better place than the internet to express someone's frustrations with a surgery gone wrong or a terrible recovery. You can vent, rant, warn and even seek consoling from others. However, it's statistically unlikely to be a true reflection of all the surgeries and recoveries and their outcomes. If fact, it's more likely that the majority of those with routine or great outcomes are anxious to just get on with their new lives without the need to share it on the internet.

But I do agree with you that ......if kept in perspective, the internet can be a useful place to gather first hand information that can help with one' s own procedure, what ever that might be.

Just keep in mind........"I saw it on the internet....they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true"...........Nuf said.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
