Loose Skin Worries

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm t-minus 19 days out. I'm starting to get some worries about loose skin, and the ability to function with it if I'm unable to get it taken care of right away. Look, I honestly don't expect anything except if it's bad, I'm horrible that way. I'm worried that I'll have a lot of loose skin that will make everyday life tough. Everyone says I carry my weight well, when I tell them I weigh in the upper 300's, they call me a liar, etc. The heaviest I've been is 424, lowest is 299, once, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. I carry a large amount of muscle mass in my legs and arms, upper back, my stomach and chest are the trouble spots. The pic is my at around 390, I have collarbones even then. I'm down to 354 +/- 3 pounds depending on day and time, obviously. 6'1, 28 years old. I guess I'm more so looking for some input from anyone who had a similar body composition and how things turned out. How BAD is loose skin? Is it something that can really cripple me in my daily life? I don't THINK it will be too awful bad...but...I'm not sure at all.

I have no lose skin, and depending on your goal weight you might not either. (my goal weight was modest at 170) I did temporarily have a little bit on my abdomen and arms during rapid weight loss phases. But it bounced backed nicely. Your age is on your side!!!

Like SoS said, that 28 is a good number. I am 64 and over a year out. I only lost 111 pounds but the loose skin lurks about my belly area. I loofah it and lotion it and tell it to tighten up and hope that it will. But I have spent 0 hours awake worrying about it. I like wearing clothing and I look pretty good in it and my wife is not unduly repulsed by me with my shirt off. B)

I have lost over 120lbs all together from my highest and have a some loose skin. But I have also had 2 babies and a c-section as well. But the skin is not so bad that it causes me problems. I actually had more problems when I was at my heaviest. Since you are younger, most likely you will not have many issues. I would expect some, but I guess no one knows for sure.

I have lost 142 pounds & I do have loose skin. Mostly my stomach area. My arms are in good shape. But the skin is live able. It's not restricting me. I will eventually have it removed but overall my health is 100% better than it has ever been. Skin be damned at least the fat is gone!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
