I was sleeved in September 2012, my Hair loss started slowly in December, and now in January I can say that I have lost about half of my hair.< /p>

I'm afraid to wash or comb it out, it breaks my heart.

My question is "when will it stop?" has anyone gone through the same thing and then had their hair grow back?

I'm really worried.

Yes, it does get better your body has to stabalize itself. You went through a major surgery. I have lost quit a bit myself, I just try to get all my Protein in and make sure I take my Vitamins daily. Have your levels check to, just to make sure your not deficent.

I know someone who also had significant hair loss post, but she wasn't taking her vitamins/supplements either.

I am concerned w/what constitutes as "hair loss"?? I had short hair, have let it grow out, and now with medium length hair, i've noticed more coming out at shampooing/conditioning rather than brushing. Should I be concerned?

Some people experience slight, some people more. I have lupus, therefore I had a lot of hair falling out. My hair is fine and now I cut all my hair off to a pixie and the Hair loss stopped. Hopefully it will grow out nicely again, until I have another lupus flair.

I lost a lot of my hair as well. The Hair loss lasted about 5 months. It seems to have stopped now. My hair is still thin but I can see some growth coming back. It *will* stop, just make sure to get in all your Protein and eat enough calories. I also take a Biotin supplement and I use the Length & Strength Shampoo from Garnier.

I had very thick hair. Lost a lot starting month four. It is finally stopping as I hit the 6th month mark. It will come back. Had the same thing happen when my thyroid was out of wack. Having always had thick hair, now this thinner hair is easier to manage, Lol

To the people that has thinning hair were you slacking on your Vitamins or will it happen if you never even miss a Vitamin ? I have really really long hair. Wondering if i should go ahead and whack it off.

I take my vitamins everyday, but i am struggling to get my protien in. So I think it is a combination of getting both of those two things in all the time especially at the beginning

My hair is thin and sparse to begin with, and I lost somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 the volume. I had surgery in January 2012 and it started 4-4.5 months post-op and lasted about 6 months.

I now have lots of re-growth that is up to 1.5 inches long and it's thickening up again. I am also the proud wearer of a pixie cut and my hair hasn't been this short in almost 30 years.

My mom has super thick, with tons of it, hair. She's had two WLS and didn't notice any Hair loss either time.

It certainly grows back. It happens to everyone and it is your body's response to healing after the surgery. Your body turns off all non essestioal systems to speed healing and unfortunately hair is not essential to our survival. Better than losing your nails huh? ;-)

Just take care of yourself and get your Protein in. Take your Vitamins. It will start back in a couple months. I didn't really start loosing mine until 5 months. everyone is different. The reaction is delayed depending on when the hair is formed in the follicles.

Thanks Catracks, I'm just freaking out a little... I'm pulling clumps of it out in the shower!

Knowing that most people who have had vls experience some kind of Hair loss is comforting.

Can't wait for it to start growing back!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
