Long way until surgery, post op diet without surgery for now?

Recommended Posts

I have a few months at least until I'll be able to get the surgery so me and my Dad have gone to the psychologist, nutritionist, surgeon and the nurse a few times and we have learned about the post-op diet.

I have samples for the shakes and Vitamins. Would it be okay for someone who hasn't had the sleeve to follow the post op diet? The shakes, Vitamins and Protein guidelines along with the portion sizes? We figured we might as well give it a shot to drop some weight without the surgery before since we have to wait a few months regardless, right? I know there may be some needed adjustments but would doing this diet be ok or would the lack of solid foods and more Protein Shakes instead of regular meals?

I guess I want to know if it's safe or not. I have the packets, foods list, portion sizes, vitamins, Protein Shakes.< /p>

Yes, I think it is possible BUT I do believe it will be an adjustment period. If I were you, I would cut out all bad food options now making the transition easier- minimal sugar, low carbs, nothing fried, etc. seems as though many refuse to let go of things like Diet Coke and struggle fighting the cravings afterwards. I cut Pepsi and Coca-Cola slurpees months ahead and it was the best decision I ever made. On occasions, I do wish to have one in my hand but simply say no because those things were on the list of terrible choices that got me to my highest of 295 pounds. The decisions made now will only help you in the long run.

Also, no rush but since you do have time, check out the recipe section and other bariatric recipe sites and build your own cookbook. The same food gets old after awhile ;)

Congrats and good luck!!!

AND Vitamins + Protein are always good to have for bariatric and non-bariatric patients. No problem there. I will add that some people find that their taste buds change, sense of smell changes, and become lactose intolerant. Try different options to prepare for post-op. I was fine with milk but was unable to tolerate the Protein Drink I liked pre-op. additionally, Oscar Meyer oven roasted turkey was my fav but I can no longer eat it due to it's smell... something I never smelled before. Having turkey and Munster cheese rolls were a favorite lunch option that I had to completely alter. Keep positive and your options open

I agree with Melissa.

Talk to your nutritionist as well. I admire your commitment but alot of the post op diet in the first few weeks is about what your stomach can handle post surgery, not just about losing weight.

Getting your repotore of VSG friendly recipies going like Melissa said would be a good idea.

The thing I'd worry about is post op you'll be getting 600 - 800 cals a day and generally you'll stick to that relatively easily. Pre VSG sticking to that is like torture!

Talk to your nutritionist. Maybe look at doing 1200 cals a day with same shakes and some VSG friendly meals?

Good luck,

Deano

I immediately cut white carbs, starchy veggies and dropped the fruit to lower glycemic fruits. Ate a high Protein diet and followed the basic rules... Protein first, small bites, chew to nothing, no Water 30 before and 45 after and learned to track intake daily.. It got my cabinets cleaned out and started building good habits for post op. i also think it has made the liquid phase easier to live with.... Oh..and lost 23 pounds in the process. I wish i had been able to make myself exercise more because i believe surgery recovery goes easier if you have.

Great, thanks for the advice guys. I've started to watch the carbs and basically avoid them as much as possible but I live with my parents so it's hard because they aren't and I can't afford to go out and get the healthy salads or whatever it may be. My family has some kind of rice or potatoes with pretty much every meal! I'm a college student.

I have been on a low sugar diet for years because my face breaks out when I drink a coke or something a couple days later, it's ridiculous so I don't drink sodas or eat deserts. I do love sweet tea though, it's everywhere in Texas.

I was thinking of using some of my student loan money and buying one of those professional blenders like they have at jamba juice and throw some vegetables and stuff in there and use those with meals or in place of them sometime.

Be careful with juicing! You can get loads of carbs even with veggies. Buy some cheap cans of green Beans and spinach and eat a low fat Protein. No need for fancy equipment! I have an Ostar smoothie maker that's awesome and was about $30 at Walmart. There are loads of all liquid diets, but my preop qoils probably be easiest does you. It's two meals of Protein Shakes and one small meal I'd low fat low carb meal. That's a lot like the slim fast diet. Also....the reason for the preop diet is to shrink your liver to make surgery easier ans safer. Your liver lives on top of your stomach on the right aide ....most obese people have enlarged livers caused by fat within the liver.

Oh really? I had no idea that was the reason for the preop diet. Yeah I wasn't wanting to do an all liquid diet right now but I have trouble eating greens straight up for some reason, I can't get them down so I tried green smoothies and they were pretty good and I could put any kind of vegetable, fruit, protein or flavoring I wanted so I thought I would have a couple of them a day in addition to the small meals.

As of right now, Dr. Cribbins in Plano. He was the closest to where I live.

Dr. Cribbins is doing my surgery as well on 2/26! When is yours? My hubby already had it on 1/15 and loves cribbins and the staff there...

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
