Heparin shots at home

Recommended Posts

So it seems like not all surgeons do this. Why is this? Please explain!

I'll be going to mx and my surgeon doesn't.

I had shots right before my surgery and the next day in the hospital, and was not required to continue at home. My understanding is that they look at your history and see if you are predisposed to blood clots, or have had clotting issues before. I'm not sure if some require it of everyone. Good luck!!

I am pre-op and my surgeon warned me that he requires 5 daily shots to be done at home leading up to the surgery day. He said he prefers to err on the side of caution where blood clots are concerned and requires this of everyone. He does many laporiscopic procedures not just bariatric surgeries. I don't think I can give myself a shot so I will need to find a friend to help me get this done.

The needle that you use to inject the Heparin is TEENY TINY!!! It's so small that you can barely feel it when it breaks the skin. You usually have to inject into your thighs, so it's really easy to give it to yourself. Be brave it's nothing compared to everything else we have to go through!

Thanks everyone.

My surgeon says they prefer to do anti coagulants after surgery rather than prior to.

My mom had a blood clot in her leg when she was pregnant with me, and about 4 years ago my moms brother had a pulmonary embolism. Should I be concerned?

Have your doctor do a blood test for something called factor 5 Leiden..it is a blood clotting mutation..that increases your risk..my dad and sister had clots too..my dad died ..and me and my sis got checked..we both have it..that's why I saw a blood doctor and got a prescription fir the shots ..it wasn't my surgeons prescription..I just told him about my disorder. Good luck

My doctor did an entire battery of coagulant tests a minimum of a week before surgery due to a blood clot history in my family. The tests came back negative, but as a precaution I took shots home with me. I gave them to myself in the fatty part of my abdomen. The clot issue was a real motivator in getting me to walk as much as possible.

I was given the prescription and did it for 5 days. I had to inject them in the fatty part if my abdomen. It wasn't bad at all. The needle is very small

I would inquire with the surgeon especially if you are traveling. Obesity and long flights and your family history put you at greater risk of a blood clot and pulmonary embolism.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
