I am 17 months post-op and back to my pre-surgery weight. I lost about 30 lbs right after the surgery, but I've gained it all back. I need to get back on track, but feel so discouraged by it all.

Sorry to hear that Sarah, this is a concern for myself and I am sure a lot of others. How much (quantity) do you eat at a time? Are there any support groups in your area? I am 3 months out and still have cravings for sweets. I imagine that I will never be able to have them in my house.

I eat between 4-8 oz, but as you know, even small amounts of calorie-laden foods can make you gain weight. I am guilty of eating things I shouldn't. I am also guilty of "grazing". The weight loss center has a support group that meets once a month, but it's during the week, and doesn't fit my work schedule.

Well you know how you gained it back so like the other poster said you have to get back to basics. No junk, measure your food, low carb, exercise. Get control of yourself, you didn't have this surgery to fail, you can do this!! Go see your NUT and doctor for help.

I am researching the sleeve as a revision from the lap band. Your post is a big concern of mine and everyone else I'm certain. Thanks for posting your experience. Sometimes, the many positive stories make us forget that there is another side to the WLS experience. I hope you find your way back to the losers circle soon.

I could sit here and make up all kinds of excuses, but in all truthfulness, I have no one to blame but myself. I have thought about contacting my Dr and nutritionist, but the truth is, I am too embarrassed and ashamed because I have failed myself.

Do you know what size boughie was used on your stomach? do you feel you can eat too much when it's dense Protein like beef?

I can relate with feeling embarrassed about regain. But I'm sure your medical team would want you to come in so that they can help. They'd rather see you with extra pounds, than to NOT see you at all and have you struggle alone! But yeah, it'll probably still feel a little embarrassing...but try to remember it's just the 'pride' talking, and to not let it override your worthiness of receiving help. Hang in there...I know you got this one. :)

WLS is not easy, I failed with the lap band (lost 60lbs then gained it all back) but was not goin to fail with the sleeve. With the lapband I ate whatever I wanted or was too tight to eat much and would eat slider foods such as Cookies and other junk....It is hard, I still find myself cheating with the sleeve but I always know when to get back up! Dont ever give up, the only person that can help you is you. And it takes more then just 1 day. First week is the hardest and then it becomes easy. Give yourself a week and see how well you can do. But you have to start now, dont keep thinking "tomorrow" as I have always been the one to do that! So far with my sleeve I have lost about 80 pounds...I am super happy and im learning how to utilize my tool...You need to still remember that you still do have a tool, this is what you paid for! :)

As a new person at this, I am very interested in knowing and understanding how this happens. My understanding is that you can only take in so much but I can definitely see eating more frequently to potentially make up calories. I guess I thought this couldn't really happen though until at least 9 months to 1 year out. What kinds of foods or behaviors lead down the slippery slope? I think this is a very important topic for people to talk about because we are all at risk for this.

Sarah, I am sorry you are going through this. I lost 100 pounds 6 years ago, moved, and put all and then some back on. I have avoided my friends since then because of the shame. Making up excuses as to why I couldn't visit was sad. I am guessing that trying to make a come back after having the surgery is quite a challenge. What I really respect you for is that you were brutally honest about the how and why this happened. That seems to be the biggest obstacle of all - admitting the truth. Good for you. I don't know what the best next action is since I am still so new to this. However, I hope you know that you have a support system here. I know you can overcome this and turn things around if you put your mind to it.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
