Pre-op weight 220lbs or under

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I was sleeved on 11/15 (one month tomorrow!) and I was 219, today I am 201 so only 18 lbs. I'm very upset about it but it's better down then up. I just don't understand why I'm losing soooo slowly! I have PCOS, so that could be part of it, but fortunately the numbers are going down! I see my surgeon today and I'm hoping that his scale shows the same thing, but it's always about 3 lbs higher than my scale! :( Maybe he can explain to me why it's so slow for me and like many of you, I see folks losing 25+ the first week!

It's all good as long as the scale is going in the right direction!

My weight the day of surgery (11/13/12) was 172. My BMI was 31. I paid out of pocket bc my insurance wouldn't cover me unless I had a BMI of at least 35. I had gone through a lot of trouble (dieting, rigorous exercise, etc) to get down to the weight I was at presurgery and I could feel it starting to creep back on. I didn't want to wait until my BMI was back at 35 to have the surgery. I honestly feel like there is a bit of prejudice against people having surgery with lower BMI's. Like we should just be able to do it on our own without any problems. To those people I want to say, if it's so easy to lose the weight while you're at a lower BMI with out a tool like the sleeve, WHY DIDN'T YOU DO IT when your BMI was lower? I can list a million diets/ workout routines I've tried and it has been extremely hard to maintain the weight I was presurgery. Bottom line, I was sick of the yo-yo dieting, the constant gaining and losing and feeling like crap about myself. I explained my situation to my surgeon, who was extremely supportive and we set the surgery for two months after my initial consultation.

Anyway, enough of my rant. I am now about a month post op and am down to 149.8 as of this morning! I had the single incision surgery (though my belly button) and I couldn't be happier!

I too see a stigma with low bmiers as mine was 32 and I "didn't look that big"! That being said I was still medically obese and obese is obese right? That's why I like this thread, hopefully there will be no judgment here as we all have obviously had our struggles to get us here. Amazing wl results! Any tips for the newbies? My date was dec3:)

Hi I'm new to the site, and this is exactly the type of forum I've been looking for. I'm 5'3. At first apt in Aug I was212, now I'm 207. Current BMI is 36.7 My goal weight is 130-140. I would be ok with at least a 10lb weight loss per month. It just took me 3months to lose 5lbs! I'm preparing myself for it to take about 8-9 months to reach my goal(sooner would be great)!

My surgery date is Jan 10th

At my first consult, I had a BMI of 40.5 weighing 242, just qualified but then I had severe sleep apnea and other issues so I probably couldve gotten approved with a 35+.

My ins. Required me to do a 6 mos weight loss program. I started in march at 227 I was up and down between 200-202 before surgery, I only managed to lose about 26 lbs in 8 mos and I was working out. I really need this to work like you said as long as it is going down its a plus. On a regular basis a person should lose 2 lbs a week that would be 8 lbs and you more than doubled it. I think this will also help our skin catch up with our weight loss so we are not so flabby. Keep up the good work.

All your stories are keeping me motivated when I just wanna break down and cry from these esophageal spasms. After years of dealing with lap band complications to have the revision Monday and end up with a possible side effect.

Since we are all around similar weights thought it would be fun to add each other to our fitness pal apps to support each other.

Try to find shakes with higher Protein count, especially if you can't drink as much. I know you said whey protein is making you nauseus but try. It's very important that you get that protein. Are you on soft stuff yet? Greek yogurt is high in protein. Met-rx protein plus has 51g per serving.

I use EAS Protein Shakes and there is one that is chocolate FUdge and has 42 g of protein! It is a little thick, but it definitely helps me to get in my Protein for the day because I also find it hard to get all 75-80 g of protein in and then another 50-60 oz of Water on top of that. They are tasty and you can get them in Walmart or ShopRite or on line. They also have a carb free one that I haven't tried yet but has 30 g of protein. Those I think you have to order, haven't found them in the stores yet.

I was barely a 35 BMI, which with my comorbidities, was enough to get insurance to cover. The doctor's office wanted me to "maintain" that weight until approved by insurance. I took that time to have a "wake" for all those foods that I would not be indulging in later. Once insurance approved me, I started eating sensibly, I'd already gotten tired of many of those foods. I wanted to shrink my liver before surgery, especially since my doctor doesn't require a pre-op diet, other that Clear liquids the day before. I went into surgery on Dec 6, at 227.8. I'm now hovering around 215. I hope to be in onederland soon.

One advantage we have is that we can do more exercise sooner. If 600 lbs and confined to a wheelchair, you cant get up and run, we can at least walk. We wont lose as fast because we're not carrying around as much weight, but again, if a person weighs so much that they cant be ambulatory yet, we can burn more calories than them.

That is very true, never thought about it that way.

Keep up the good work on your wl.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
