What Foods Did You Have To Give Up-Can't Eat Any Longer?

Recommended Posts

obviously post op, my diet will be controlled by portion and type (protein, Protein, protein!)...BUT...eventually, I will be able to be a bit more liberal with diet. So, what foods did you LOVE pre-op that you CAN'T eat post-op, because of physical inability, or nausea/vomiting, etc??? More curious than anything...

I'm week 10 post op and I'm still trying new things. I have had very bad experiences with anything that has much fat in it. I took a bite of the fried crust from fish and chips and two fries and felt bad for hours. I ate a few bites of chocolate cheesecake and felt really sick. For some reason pineapple doesn't sit well, nor do boiled turnips. I don't have any trouble with bread, but I don't eat it because I just don't crave it much anymore and would rather eat "real" food. Right now my favorite things to eat are chicken, yogurt and cheese.

My surgeon said he wanted me off of Protein shakes by Jan. 1 and only eating food. That is freaking me out just a little.

Really greasy foods

Soft white bread

Raw onions

Lettuce

Really spicy foods (miss my chili so much!)

So, looking at the above list, two all-American favorites are out:

Hamburgers (on Buns with the works)

Chili dogs

Having divulged the short list, allow me to say I don't really care about it! I am skinny!!!!

Just remember at good Protein to carb ratio is 2 to 1. You should have 80 grams of protein so that means no more than 40 grams of carbs per day. Be careful of the pastas, breads and those hidden carbs like fruits. Look it up a normal sized apple has 20 grams of carbs. A good thing that has helped me is our plate should be the size of a dessert plate. Cut that in half, one half is protein. The other half, cut in half and one of those is carbs the other is veggies. My cousin who went thru this 2 years ago put it this way: you go out for a steak dinner, you have 3 bites of steak and a forkful or two of baked potato and a forkful or two veggies and your done, take the rest home. Good Luck

I can eat anything but there are some things I need to be careful of-broccoli stems are really fibrous and make me sick but the floret parts are fine. chicken needs extra moisture--gravy, cranberry sauce, ketchup. Other than those two, no problems.

Really nothing, just moderation but I live in Texas so flour tortillas where almost a daily thing and they just sit real heavy so if I do have them its a bite or two. I can't eat a whole one anymore, not a good feeling. I can do corn chips- crispy shell tacos.

Hard boiled eggs, and I used to love them. Pasta gives me a too full feeling even just a little, so I avoid it.

Any kind of potato preparation other than mashed has been the cause of my vomiting probably 9/10 times since surgery. I've finally learned and stopped bothering with them altogether.

Nothing disagrees with me at all, and I have not put anything on the "off limits forever" list. That said- if I indulge in certain foods, they have to be eaten more slowly, and obviously, smaller amounts to avoid a dumping-like effect. (rich foods) Still being in weight loss mode though, it is not always in my best interest to mess around with delicious bits, but it helps to have some tastes so I don't go crazy.

I can eat anything I want, I work hard on choosing healthy foods for the most part. I am a sugar addict and I am struggling with this at the moment. I eat a lot less now though.... :)

Dense foods such as steak require real concentration on my part. Chew, chew, chew, and don't eat too much or to the bathroom I must run. It takes some of the charm out of good food to see it the second time.

I find that I don't really like the consistency of a milkshake or smoothie (healthy or indulgent) anymore...weird, because I've had ice cream and been fine (can only eat a little before it starts to sit "funny" though) I think it's the frothyness that kinda grosses me out now...other than that, I stay away from most bread because it's just so fluffy and takes up much-needed Protein space ;) A little toast or a multigrain cracker or melba toast is fine. I don't miss big hamburger Buns or breadsticks. I agree with others that chewing is a big factor and something I have to make sure I'm aware of, especially with meats.< /p>

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
