Sleeved On Nov 5 Still Sick Here Is My Story

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this sight. I was sleeved on Nov 5 and I'm still sick. Never thought I would go through what I'm going through. I'm still on liquids the Saturday after my surgery I had to be rushed back to the hospital for severe abdominal pains. Was admitted and had to stay until the following Tuesday. Thought things would get better no leaks or anything. Now I'm home still not able to get Protein in because all the shakes make me sick to my stomach I have been drinking Gatorade and Water to make sure I stay hydrated. Please help... Any ideas on how I can get protein in since I can't stand the shakes. I thought I saw were some people were saying there was some fruity protein. Is anyone else experiencing this. I go back to the doc on Tuesday for another follow up. PLEASE HELP!!!

Are you sure there are no leaks? You're a ways out and still sick...that's concerning!

Are you on a PPO? They are typically prescribed but some docs still make you ask for them. They make a big difference in nausea issues. Without them, even at almost three months out from my first surgery I still find some things bother me.

My saving grace was oveltine in 0% fat milk. Warm, hot or ice cold it works and isn't as thick as the shakes (which were a challenge for me early out as well). The milk gives you about a gram per ounce (a little more actually) so you get in some protein. There is also a protein called necter that people like here. I haven't tried it but I know that it comes in fruit flavors. powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury protein, unflavored is also easy to add to broth that isn't too hot.

Iggychick... Yes when I was admitted back into the hospital they did additional test and there were no leaks. I went to the doctor this past Tuesday and he said everything looked fine. I was experiencing diarrhea and brought that to my docs attention he said that was normal getting all the stuff out from surgery. I have been able to drink a little Milk, but that sometimes sits in my chest. I drink really slow and I just don't know what else to do. I had purchased the Unjury chicken but that makes me sick on my stomach as well. I just feel like this was the worse thing I have done in my life. I'm too the point that I'm afraid I am going to end up back in the hospital. I have nausea meds that I'm taking I have to take with milk and my Prilosec if not then I can't get it down. I'm just so miserable....can't turn back the clock but I just want to get better. I need energy...

You could mix unflavored or vanilla Protein with some juice like tang or crystal light, make it thin so it goes down easier. Also I had good luck with sugar free pudding mixed with unflavored Protein Powder. Go online, there are a multitude of sites that offer mixes, you're bound to find one or more that are helpful. like Bariatric Choice.com, Diet Direct.com or nausha nutrition to name a few. just type Bariatric foods in the search engine. Good luck, this too will pass.

I also had the mucus feeling... come to find out I had thrush in my esophagus that I am still battling 2 month post op :/

I eat very little but I do drink milk regularly. I want to try the ovaltine or even sf hot chocolate as long as it isn't too sweet. Water is another beverage I cant get down, just tastes nasty. I need to find a sugar sub that doesnt leave a bad after taste. Sweet n low and splenda aren't working.

Thrush is a yeast build up.... when its oral your tongue is usually white as well as your gums. Come to find out mine also went down my esophagus. I was on 2 weeks of diflucan and some lozenges. The whiteness is gone but it takes time to clear up so I still have the difficulty swallowing and off tastes. I believe the items can all be bought at a grocery store.

klperry,

my mom swears by ONE pink and ONE blue combination of sweeteners. Give it a try, I like that combination for my iced tea.

Google the magic pink mouthwash for thrush. It may give you some relief this weekend. Its made with pepto and a few other items but maybe if you can gargle it it'll get you through til next week.

Not to scare u but I'm going through something similar. I had surgery 10/2 1 week out I was vomiting white foam I went to my surgeon and he said that my new stomach might be twisted it does not happen often but it does happen. So he ordered an upper endoscopy because of all the vomiting I ended up being admitted due to severe swelling of the stomach. Then I was released followed up with my pcp 3 days later I was admitted again due to high sugars. Maybe ur stomach has twisted. I was told I'm going to have mines dilated again cause I'm still spitting up the white foam like mucus type.

Sorry for making it too long. But don't give up it will get better.

I also spent my bday and hurricane sandy in the hospital. How great was that?????

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
