Can Someone Tell Me When?

Recommended Posts

Hi....so I am really scared that my hair will NOT stop falling out any time soon. It has been happening since 2 months post op. I am now 4.5 months. That equals lots of hair down the drain.

The only thing I want to know is at what point does it stop????

I appreciate those of you that want to give advice....but I am eating enough Protein, taking Vitamins and Biotin, using nioxin...doing EVERYTHING that I have ever heard of to help it to stop. It is not stopping....in fact it may be getting worse.

I just would like to know how much longer this will go on.....so if you can just tell me when your Hair loss STOPPED....like 6 months post op? 8 months post op? Big breath......A year?

I have long hair and it is noticeably thinner!!!!!!!!!! People are asking me "did you cut your hair?"......"what did you do different to your hair?".............."is your hair different?".....so I KNOW it is not just me that is noticing.

I used to have thick, beautiful....did I say thick.......... long hair.

It is coming out in giant handfuls.

WHEN DOES IT STOP????????????????

I know it will grow back...but at this point I will probably have to cut it soon as it just looks ridiculously thin now...... and long and thin hair is NOT a good look.

Please....if anybody has had this experience......just let me know when your hair loss stopped.

Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear this, and I think it's only temporary. How much Protein do you get everyday?, because my NUT told me if I didn't get enough, it could cause Hair loss, as well as a Vitamin deficiency. I have 70-80 grams of protien a day plus my b-complex has Biotin in it, that is supposed to help with your hair. So far I haven't had any hair loss, I'm only 7weeks out. It will stop for you, feel better :)

My surgery was 8/2/12. I am down about 52 lbs at this point, and I swear about 2 lbs of that is my hair. It started coming out about 6 or 7 weeks ago. I realized somewhere along the road I wasn't getting enough Protein, altho I was faithful with my supplements. I added back Protein Shakes and Iron to my pill regime and today, today!! I noticed less Hair loss in my hands, and brush. I am hoping this is the beginning of the road back, but have no idea if it is or not.

Oh good! Thanks for responding! My Hair loss started at about 2 months and now at 4.5 months since surgery, I have lost a lot!!! I started taking extra Protein supplements in an attempt to make it stop! I am taking in around 100 grams per day, as well as Iron and zinc! I truly am trying everything and hope it stops soon! I heard on another website it usually ends around 6 months post op! Has anybody here experienced that time frame?

My grandma had the RNY and her hair loss and damage was better around 9 months out but she couldn't tolerate Protein or any food til 3 months out...which would be about 6 months for someone with normal recovery. Good luck!!

It will stop, trust me! Mine fell out for around 4-5 months! I cut my hair short because it was so bad and I was getting of pulling out clumps in the shower. With it short, I didn't notice it as bad. I am not 2 years post-op, and my hair is back and actually better than ever I think because of better diet and extra supplements that I take.

The only thing that I ever noticed that made a difference was a supplement called Biosil. It is NOT the same as Biotin. It is a silicon(?) supplement that is suppose to help your body produce collegen. The extra Protein, extra Vitamins, Biotin, etc never worked for me. That is the only thing I can suggest.

Good luck, and don't worry, you won't go bald!

You may want to think about cutting it. With it being long, the weight pulls it down and all the styling factors don't help. I lost a lot of hair after having a baby and unfortunately cutting my hair short helped. I'll probably have to do that again because I just had another baby and the sleeve. My hair is doomed!

I'm having the same problem at 4.5 months out. hair coming out in clumps, it's everywhere! I cut my hair about a month ago hoping that shorter hair wouldn't fall out as much but it seems worse. I really hope it stops soon!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I am praying it will end soon. I will try the Biosil...and maybe even cut it too....but I bet it will just have to run its course.

Mine stopped falling out about 9 months post op. It is starting to look better now as the regrowth is about 4-5 inches long, still, I have long hair and the ends are thin.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
