Protein Shakes Forever?

Recommended Posts

So I had my first incident with someone in the public disapproving of my upcoming surgery. I went to the health food store to get samples of Protein Shakes and the lady said "yeah if you will be bariatric you need to find one you like because this will be your food for the rest of your life"

Then she says "Your not that bad off. Are you sure about this? You could probably lose the natural way"

Ugg... Never mind this lady but will I be on shakes the rest of my life? And she said I have to mix them with Water not milk for bariatric because it can't be too thick. That doesn't sound good at all.

I have encountered bariatric surgery patients who have tried to discourage me. It's interesting to watch.

Hey Marquel! Sounds like somebody was talking to you who didn't know diddly-squat, to put it nicely. This person was not very informed -- you've heard the saying, that a person "only knows enough about a subject to make them dangerous"! I'd complain to the manager; I'm quite sure that some of that store's business comes from bariatric patients.

And no, you will NOT be on Protein shakes the rest of your life. In fact, after about 3 weeks of surgery, most surgeons want you to get your Protein through real food, not shakes.< /span>

don't listen to her.....she isnt your doctor. You do not have to be on the shakes for the rest of your life.. You will eventually be able to eat enough Protein without the shakes and milk is good..it adds Calcium. I use Unjury brand, tastes awesome but you have to buy it online.....its worth the trouble.

I recommend Unjury shakes also in chocolate Splendor and vanilla. I tried the strawberry Sorbet and did not care for it at all. It tasted like medicine to me. But the others are great. They also have an unflavored powder that mixed with my Soup tonight.

Agree with the others. Who do you trust? The retail salesperson or the well-educated medical team treating you?

I'm 10 weeks out and usually have two shakes a day (early and late). The doc says I should aim to be down to one a day by 4 months and getting my nutrients mostly from what I eat. I mix the unjury strawberry Sorbet with both Water and almond milk, and the rest with almond milk. To be frank, I prefer the vanilla and the chocolate splendor the most, and they do not froth up so much if you use a Blender Bottle instead of an electric blender. I've never been able to drink milk though. The Unjury chicken Soup is an absolute must the first couple weeks.

Go slow and follow your doctor's instructions. Don't worry about everyone else.

All liquids no way.....I'm almost 5 months post-op and my nutritionist told me she doesn't want me relying on shakes and Protein Bars for my Protein. I am to get them from food. Knowledge is power and I would also complain to the manager.

Almost 11 months out and over 100 pounds down....I have come off all my blood pressure meds, I have a clean bill of health and regained my self-confidence and I am able to run again and I haven't been able to do that since high school....even if I did have to drink a Protein Shake every day, it would damn sure be worth it!! I don't drink them daily but at least once or twice a week....the fact is after surgery you are Protein deficient and if drinking a shake every now and then compensates for all the other rewards then so be it....please don't let that discourage you!!

I'm not discouraged. And I am self pay in MX so I don't think I will have as much info from the dr as some of you do.

I guess she just made me feel bad about what I was doing.

That's the last time I speak openly with strangers lol.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I am excited for my sleeve and I've been through a lot to try to lose (most of my life) so I this wont scare me off.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
