Server Sleep Apnea Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

I just had my sleep study done last week and I got my results back and they diagnos to me with severe sleep apnea. I went 53 seconds without breathing at one point. Anyways so my question was for anyone that has had severe sleep apnea would your surgeon perform surgery on you to get the sleeve or no or were they to scared too?

Hey Sweety,

I have severe sleep apnea too. I stop breathing 58 times an hour. Im still having surgery. My surgeon and pulmonologist know all about it. Ive had it for at least 4 years. A good majority of overweight people I believe have sleep apnea. Does that help?

My sleep apnea is considered mild but, regardless, the question of whether or not to proceed with the surgery given my having the condition never even came up except to laud the surgery as a potential cure since excess weight is usually part of the cause. Had my surgery 1 week ago and have only used my CPAP once since it felt a little strange (hard to explain). May have to get an adjustment but I'm going to give it some time before I go back to my sleep specialist. Good luck with everything!

I started researching the sleeve specifically because of my sleep apnea. My weight triggered it so along with the other health benefits, Im hoping my apnea goes away.

Yes I have a cpap. Im not sure what pressure Im at actually. Ive not been great at wearing it at all but once I knew I had to get cleared by the pulmonologist I started wearing it (total of 2 weeks) so they would have some data to read. They had me bring it in and said that the data showed I was at the right pressure and it was great. I have to go back after a 30 pound loss to get rechecked. Ill probably wait for a 50 cause sleep studies are not fun. They told me to bring the cpap to the hospital on sleeve day too.

I was also told to bring my CPAP to the hospital and there it sat, never used my entire stay. You should do what they instruct you to do but it may wind up just being one more thing to carry to/from the hospital:(

Same here, I found that amusing. I also have severe sleep apnea, ~50 AHI. But I rarely use my CPAP. I try, but I either can't fall asleep or end up taking it off in my sleep. And it dries my sinuses out in a bad way, even with the built-in humidifier cranked way up.

My program told me to get a new sleep study around one year. If I still have the severe apnea at that point I will recommit to the CPAP.

I was diagnosed with severe osa 10 years ago and have used a bipap all that time. My current settings are 13/8.

I was told to bring my machine to the hospital and was in ICU for the first night after the surgery because they were worried about the apnea. However, I didn't use the machine while in the hospital. I was monitored and they said my episodes were within normal ranges! Ok, could've been because I was sleeping on my back, being still and head/shoulders elevated, but it worked. I'm 6weeks out from my surgery and haven't used my machine at all. I'm not saying the apnea is gone, but I've not noticed being more tired than before when using it every night. Plus, from what I've been told, I would snore like mad--like the house is crumbling around you from the vibrations, bad--and hubs says it's not so bad that he can't sleep now, so something has improved.

Though I'll admit to not having had a proper sleep study since 2003--so loads of things may have changed. I just didn't think the changes would be for the better.

I'm not giving up my machine though (it's rented through the insurance company) until I know I'm in the clear. Truly, just hate the idea of doing another study.

I have severe sleep apnea. I took my bipap to the hospital and used it whenever I was sleeping. From my understanding, there is concern when taking pains meds and sleep apnea.

I have mild sleep apnea 8/20 and have been on a CPAP machine for about 2 years. It was my sleep specialist who recommended I have WLS. I have lost 22kg in just under 3 months and am seeing sleep doc on 14 Dec. I hope to do a new sleep study in new year and possibly get off machine.

Love how the machine makes me feel and have used it religiously since day one with tiny nasal mask. Hope this helps. Go for the surgery if it suits you. PS. Getting sleeve was the best thing I could have done.

My CPAP affair has been very strange. Ive resisted it and hated it since 2008 but the 2 weeks that I was wearing it recently, I was almost addicted to it. I found I couldnt sleep without it. I got over it though lol. If I dont wear it, I wake up with a super dry throat, my mouth coated in a white goo (so gross) and a massive headache. Im sure its from my house rattling snoring. But when I wear it I dont get any of that stuff. Luckily my husband says my snoring doesnt bother him even though its really loud.

Bunny it's a pain to use the CPAP but it is essential for your health until the doc gives you the all clear to stop using it. As you said you feel better after wearing it so why not use every night? It is 'addictive' because your body likes it when you use it. Good luck

You are correct, my body does like it when I use it so Im glad that Ive become addicted to it as of late.

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
