What Are the Symptoms of Gallstones?

Gallstones often don't cause symptoms. Those that don't are called "silent stones." A person usually learns he or she has gallstones while being examined for another illness.

When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen and upper back. The pain may last for several hours.
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Other gastrointestinal problems, including bloating, indigestion and heartburn, and gas

The lack of symptoms and being unaware of them isn't quite true for WLS patients. WLS patients are aware that our gallbladders can act up at any time because of rapid weight loss.

Good question, and i'll be interested in what other people say. I have read on here that some surgeons do take it out during their sleeve surgery.

For me, it would have been too much for my body to deal with as I also needed a hiatal hernia repair. Also, from what I understand, it isn't a given that your gallbladder will act up. I had stones pre-op so for me it was mainly a matter of time before I needed it out. Unfortunately, I needed it out sooner than later at 7 weeks post-op. .

Pain between the shoulder blades is a common symptom of a gall bladder attack. Sorry, webmd is not correct on this one! Pls let us know

Yes I have those super sharp pains under my shoulder blades also.

I do not have a gall bladder though, so mine is not GB. It was take OUT with my sleeve surgery.

Mine is like a sharp hot knife is being dug into my back right under my shoulder blades:(I feel you ;(

I have an MRI next Thursday. Also I have been numb from the belly button down since early August.

:(

Best of luck to you!

You have WHAT??? Numbing???! You didn't think you were just going to slip that in w no one commenting, did ya?:-)

Since the surgery? Did a nerve get nicked? Could the shoulder blade pain be trapped gas? PLEASE let us know what the MRI shows.

Hugs,

Judy

Is there a reason why the surgeon doesn't take them out as part of the procedure if its very possible to cause problems/pain?

Most surgeons order a gallbladder ultrasound to see if there are gallstones before surgery. If gallstones are present, even if the patient is asymptomatic, insurance will pay for both surgeries to be done at one time. Gallbladder problems are probable after large amounts of weightloss, but not absolute, so insurance doesn't cover prophylactic removal. They just wait until you have an attack, then they have to pay for the ER visit, the gallbladder surgery, and the recovery. Really smart, huh?

I should say, gallbladder problems are more possible than probable, but definitely not absolute.

Thank you Judy- yes numb- :( super NOT fun! I don't think I got nicked - I think it's my body adjusting or a pinched nerve. The neurologist is concerned though, so MRI it is.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
