Running

Recommended Posts

I have read posts from a number of sleevers that run and would like to know:

1. At what bmi or weight ratio (current to start weight) is good to start running?

2. What progressive plan did you follow to basically go from no running to being able to compete in a 5k?

I have run before, but is has been years since serious running. Also, I have a treadmill but do enjoy running outside also.

The reasons for the questions is to prevent injury. I am currently 3 months out.

I never jogged before. Before surgery I was 401. I didn't start jogging (if you wanna call it that) till I was about 305 if I can remember right. That was about 2 months ago. Now I'm 275 and really starting to like it. I'm doing the C25K....I'm in week 5 and just now getting to the point that I can carry on a conversation while I jog. My breathing is finally undercontrol. I'm not having any pain and I'm not out of breath when it's time to walk. I walk as briskly as I can, I don't speed up much when I start to jog, but it is a jog.

I did some research on shoes. The best running shoes for overweight overpronators (and alot of overweight people are overpronators) is the Brooks Beast. I bought 2 pair and love love love them. I went to the store to buy some "everyday" sneakers, and I hated every pair I tried on because I'm already spoiled by how the Brooks feel. That's why I bought the second pair.

I've been very wary of injury. I do not want a setback. I keep my form in good order and I take short strides, that's why I jog so slow. When I get lighter I'll worry about speeding up. Right now I'm doing 2-1/4 miles a day following the C25K plan. I feel like I could easily go another mile, in fact I usually do some 30 second windsprints during the cooldown.

Hi! I started running with a high bmi- weighed 185ish and I'm 5'3. I've tried running in the past when I was preop and had all sorts of issues with my joints. It's amazing what 25 pounds or so does.

I started on a treadmill running one minute than walking for four minutes. Eventually I switched over to c25k and moved my workouts outside. My youngest son was sweet enough to be my pacer. He'd run with me every time I went out.

Eventually I finished c25k and then I moved on to the 10k app. I'm now running without a training app but I use Nike + gps religiously. I add on a mile a week.

I was and I still am concerned about injuries. I stretch and I don't run back to back. I give myself at least a day between my runs. I'm also careful about putting on mileage. So far I've been extremely lucky- just completed my first half marathon on Sunday.

Good luck with the running!

I have hated jogging for 43 years. Now after 2 months I look forward to it. I hate that I cannot jog everyday. The C25K program really makes it easy.

I started around 300# and began jogging, if you call it that, at 2 months post. I started by walking between two telephone poles, then running between two poles. Couple days later, I would walk to a pole, run two poles ... week later, walk a pole, run three poles. You get the gist. Like Butter, I had always hated jogging, but I found myself enjoying it, so I bought the C25K program on the iPhone. It worked for me!

I also bought the Brooks Beasts. Great shoes as they have very firm soles. Any running store will also do a gait analysis for free to confirm pronation/supination and make shoe suggestions. Then you can go online and buy what you want.

Good luck!

Thanks for the comments. I am down to 235 lb so it seems like I could run based on your successes. I just gave to do it!

When I first started jogging I was SO out of shape that my body got really really sore afterwards and I felt like my jonts were on fire, which made it harder and harder to push myself to do it.

Now what I've been trying for the past few weeks is swimming until I reach a certain weight and can handle out-of-water exercise better.

Just an idea if jumping straight into running doesn't seem like the best idea for you. But I hope I can get to where you guys are where you look forward to jogging!! :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
