Possibly Allergic To Whey Protein

Recommended Posts

I have a sample of a rice Protein one but I haven't tried it yet. I was told they tend to be gritty.

Jrr-vanilla what? I just assumed vanilla of any of them would taste worse than the chocolate. LOL

Vanilla lets you mix for instance coffee and chocolate flavoring for a mocha, orange and banana for for a banana cream sicle. I use the JR Robb and the Chike Vanilla along with The Robb Unflavored whey I used the Egg Protein but the whey works better for my Chemistry set. Chemistry set =Torani, Davinci and Monin syrups. I mix nothing by the instructions I go lighter on the powder for instance if the amount of liquid is 12oz I use 15oz of liquid. Also tossing Protein Bars in the blender gives some good flavor profiles. I feel one of my advantages is I have a full size Ninja Blender my wife invested in for me and I started playing. Had a Bullet and everything in my opinion was grainy. The Ninja seems to liquify things more. Good luck I started ahead of surgery to get ideas dialed in.

HELP! 2 days after starting Protein drinks 1 week before my surgery up to today I have been itching like crazy. I have been to the Dr 3 times, thinking it was an allergic reaction to a bug bite, allergic reaction to the tape they used for the IV in the hospital & lastly, cellulitis. I have been given a Solu-Medrol shot, 2 prednisone packs, a rochephin shot, 3 prednisone tabs & have used hydrocortisone cream, benedryl tablets, Benedryl ointment & benedryl spray-NOTHING has helped. I am starting to think I am allergic to the whey in the Protein shakes as I read online that that can happen. Has anyone out there had this happen to them? I am trying eggwhite Protein Powder for a few days to see if the itching stops. My only problem with it is it is low in Protein (16 g for 1/4 c) & I tried to mix it into my Soup & when I nuked it, it sort of cooked...liked a souflle :-( I don't drink milk or almond milk so mixing it with that is out of the question. I start the pureed phase on Wed. so I am hoping I can mix it with something else. Suggestions would be welcome!!!

If you turn out not to be allergic, and if you had gallblader problems you might look into testing for Cholestasis which is a liver problem. Not trying to scare you but itching is a symptom................

While I was on my liquid stage, I had a couple of bad allergic reactions. Anaphylaxis reaction, throat closing, itching. This happened right while I was drinking a Protein Drink. The second time it happened, I called my allergist. He said I probably have a pure milk allergy which is what whey is made of. But, I finally figured it out on my own. This only happened when I took my Omeprazole (Prilosec) while I was drinking my Protein Shake. I spent a week just like you freaking out about how I was going to get my Protein in, walking around the store trying to figure out what I was going to drink without killing myself. I quit taking the Omeprazole and have never had another problem. I drink protein every morning in my coffee and have never had a reaction again. So, if you are on an acid reducer/reflux pill (which is common after the surgery) don't take it while you are drinking a protein shake. Hope this helps. Probably saved my life.

Jrr-it is definitely the whey as I am only itching about 1% of the time now. My Dr had said to give it til Mon. so it should be totally gone by then.

ereneeh-I have never had problems with acid reflux or heartburn. That is why my Dr was surprised I had a large hernia. he fixed it while in there. I still have no heartburn at all so I know it isn't that as I am not on any meds for it. I bought a vegetable Protein at Vitamin Shoppe on the recommendation of an employee (he drinks it) but I didn't like it-it actually made me nauseous so i took it back today, got store credit & bought one called Harmonizer. Instead of going with chocolate, I am trying vanilla so I can add stuff to it, like berries, etc. I hope this works as I am so frustrated. Thanks for all of your comments/suggestions.

The jay Robbs egg white Protein Powder unflavored is good to mix in shakes, yogurt, oatmeal etc.

I do not even taste it.

You might try it and see if you like it :)

It mixed well for me...I didn't use an entire scoop each time... just enough to be able to blend with whatever I'm eatting i.e. oatmeal, yogurt, soup...

Also use it in shakes with skim milk and fruit usually strawberries and banana.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
