Protein Question-5 Days Post-Op

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op and I know I'm not getting enough Protein in. I'm adding a spoonful of unflavored protein to my 4 oz of broth a couple of times a day, but that's not even a packet. I made a Chike Protein Shake and put it in the freezer to chill. Is that ok? If not, are there any Protein Drinks I can drink? The Isopure is gross but I'll drink it if I have to. :(

Ok, your surgeon is different than mine. At 5 days post op, I would still be on Clear Liquids, no powders allowed. Also I would only need to take in 20g of Protein a day the first week, which is half a bottle of Isopure or 3/4 bottle of cytosport. Just had my last nut visit today and those instruction were pretty specific. Week 2 is full liquids with a 40-60 g of protein intake, and just increases from there each week. Puree, soft, then regular with some restrictions...protein first, always

I wasn't allowed to start Protein supplements until day 7. Every plan is different, but my focus week 1 was supposed to be on fluids. Then day 3 was full liquids, day 7 was adding protein supplements.

I finally tried Premier Protein drinks from costco and find them easy to get down. They are 30 grams each.

Thanks. My surgeon has a really strict after program of clears for 10 days (15 for me cause I had a hernia). When I shook the Chike it didn't look clear. I will stick with the broth with added Protein and toss the Chike for now. Thanks for answering!

This is what I drank for my 2 week clear phase:

http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Best-Isopure-Protein-Bottles/dp/B0009VDB0G

These are 40 grams of Protein each and two a day got me into the 70-90 grams of protein a day window and helped me meet my Fluid intake. You can find them a GNC too.

They taste sort of like Gatorade with a bit of an aftertaste, but so what? Like the guy at GNC said, "You do what ya gotta do." It's worth it because that was the best weight loss period for me and I didn't lose muscle.

God, I think I'm doing clears wrong. I've been mixing Unjury or nectar unflavored into my juices and broths. Is that not OK go 6 days post op? I'm supposed to be on clears for 15 days. Looks relatively clear to me.

My nut says adding powders to clears is not clear. Call your doc, let him/her know what the mistake was and let the surgeon give you your next step.

I just had my 1 week ck. I was very concerned about getting in as much protien as possible. My doc told me to concemtrate on liquids, don't be worrying about the protien right now. My nutrition w/ protien is a lifetime, not these first few weeks. I hope this was the correct advice, like all of us, i want as little hanging skin as possible. My doc says resistance training will keep my muscle mass. DID HE LEAD ME ASTRAY In regards to relaxing on protien these first 3 weeks?

Nope. Hydration is paramount at this stage

My surgeon and the bariatric coordinator at the hospital emphasized getting Water in over meeting Protein goals for the first week. As you start feeling better, you're going to be able to get more Protein in. You might want to try Syntrax Nector powder. They have sample packets at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe so it's easy to try them. They're really tasty and have 23 grams of protein. Add 8 ounces of milk and that's 34 grams.

Good luck, it does get better! I was sleeved on the 20th and doing great so far.

Yes, dehydration could put you back in the hospital. That's why I though those clear Isopure whey isolate drinks were heaven sent. The enabled me to get all my fluids plus 80 grams of protein a day. Win-win!

I stopped after I went to full liquids after two weeks because of the expense, but it's worth it for those two weeks.

Protein was not concentrated on my program in this stage. Hydration was the key and that was it. I was only allowed clear liquids and drinkable yogurt for the first 14 days. Yogurt has some protein in it but not that much. This is your body's healing stage and that should be the main focus.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
