October 2006 Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

Great KStar, now we just have to come up with a challenge. I know that you can lose the 8# especially once you get your fill. Come on October bandster's lets see how many we can get to do the challenge. I think that a good challenge would be to exercise at least 4 hrs. a wk. I read an article today by Jillian Michaels from the biggest loser and she said that all she ask is that you exercise at least 5 hrs a wk and you will see a big difference. So my goal is to exercise 5 hrs. but some people might not be up to that so you can set your own personal goal. So what do ya think. I'm ready for 2009!!!

I'm good with at least 4 hours a week. I think we should start the week of January 5th. That way it is at the beginning of the week instead of the middle. How about we end it on Feb 15th, that gives us 6 weeks.

I was a October Bandster October 31st. I lost quite a bit of weight by myself before I got the band. "I have a 4cc Band that blew with a 0.5 cc fill bringing me up to 2 cc's."

Lost my insurance because we lost our jobs here in Michigan. I had one visit left to see my surgeon, and he was so disappointed that he had his student escort me out with the attitude of "come back when you can show us that you can loose weight, and you will get your fill..." Boy was I pissed off ! Especially after telling them that this was the only ins. that I had. To bad was the response... So now I have ins. and I am going to see a different surgeon up here in Northern, Michigan. I will see if they can help. If not ! Then it's back to Henry Fords, and this so called professional. I hope it's up here with Hurly Medical Center. I have regained all my weight. "basically water" but,, I have to start all over again.

Just thought I would touch basis with someone.

Shirley.

Wow ! sorry to hear about all that. I am back on track with a new surgeon trained by my old one. The new one told me that Dr. Genaw has a bad attitude, and so does his chief nurse.

But he doesn't work that way. So I was glad to hear that. So I moved up into Northern,Michigan, and he is over 100 mile drive, but he's worth it.

I am sorry to hear about the car accident, and pain. I know how it feels to blow up again after doing so good. (I MEAN HOW COULD ANY ONE FORGET !) So trust me when I say my Heart goes out.

Wat about any other October Bansters. Do they get in touch with anyone?

I would like to make contact, What about you?

You can catch me on the post op site usually. Or mail me if you want to talk.

I hope your feeling better.

Keep in touch, Shirley.

Hi there.

It's been a long time since I have been here. I actually had to start a new login. Seems they won't let me back in under my other name.

I'm reaching out to you guys with a problem that I have encountered. I was banded in Oct. of 06. I did wonderful. It wasn't a very fast loss but I was losing. And I was so proud of my self. I was actually 3 pounds shy of losing 200 pounds when my husband and I went on vacation. We were going to L.A. for a wedding. It had been 25 years since I had been home. And I gave myself the go ahead to splurge while I was there. There were places that I hadn't eaten at since I had lived there. Ididn't really over do it, but I wasn't the best bandster.

But I need to back up a little bit. In January of "10", I had developed realy bad reflux while I slept. I went to see my band Doc and after some test it showed I needed to have surgery to repair a very bad hiatal hernia. It was right at the band site. So I was facing surgery but before I got to schedule it, I found out that I needed emergency surgery. During my weight loss journey I did a lot of walking. But over a few months time I was starting to have trouble walking. I finally went to the Doctors and he orderd an MRI. It showed I had cycst growing on my spinal cord and that I needed to be in surgery as fast as I could. So I had the surgery in June and came out a champ. Doc put me on a walking schedule and I followed it to the "T". We left for vacation August 25 and got back home Sept. 19th. I went right back to walking. Then on Oct. 13th. I entered my first 5K. It hurt like hell but I finished and was so proud of myself. But I had to get back to the fact that I had another surgey facing me. So the Thursday before Thanksgiving, I had Hiatal Hernia surgery. It seemed that was where I lost my weight fight. I was gaining but at a very slow rate. Then it happened again. Back into surgey to have my gallbladder removed. Then I noticed like I had simply given up loosing. I was feeling sorry for myself that I had to have 3 surgeries in a row. I've tried several times to get back on track but it just seems like I just can't find that person I was before the surgeries started. I'm good for about 5 days and then I fall back into my bad habbits. Then you know what? Yup, back in for more surgery. Jan. 4th. I went in for a laminectomy. I had severly herniated disc. L3 and L4. So I went in and they cleaned up the fragments and got me out of pain. So I think you can now see that I kind of have a reason for feeling sorry for myself. Some how I need to find the gumption I had and get myself back to getting this weight off. I need to get the weight off that I have regained and then some.

While I was in having this last surgery, the Doctor came in to talk to me about my weight and that he felt that the band had failed me and that I should look into having a sleeve done. I told my husband after the Doc left that I will not do the surgery. My band has not failed me, I have failed my band. I need to start getting back in for fills. First thing I will have to tackle is the fact that I have let my Band Doc down. I need to stop beating myself up about the gain. I need to take the weight that I haven't gained back and add to it. I need to get back to walking and back to that girl that was so excited about getting the band. And I hope that is soon.

Sorry for dumping this on you guys, I was just hoping I could find an understanding friend.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
