Under 180Lbs And Getting Sleeved, Anyone Else?

Recommended Posts

I'm 180 (5'3") and hope to get to 175 by my surgery day on 4/11 (in Mexico). My lowest I've been was at 20 years old at 130 lbs, but Ive had a lifelong struggle with weight. My family has a history of obesity so I know my destiny. I've worked out regularly since my 20's but because of my love of food it's hard to lose and keep it off. I know the sleeve is the tool I need to control my portions, which I can't seem to control on my own. I'm ready and excited. I start my 2-week pre-op this Tuesday!

My situation is almost the exact or somewhat similar situation to yours. (Family history, dieting, college and size). I am 5'3" inches tall had gastric sleeve surgery and Mexico 7 days ago. I I weighed 180 lbs before surgery. Today seven days later I am down 10 lbs. All my life I also suffered being overweight and constantly yo-yo dieted, including while in college. I encourage you to seek support groups such as bariatric pal and there are many Facebook forms to provide great support. Everything is going to be okay. I'm encouraged because I'm seeing the weight drop. And my love for food is diminishing very quickly. Best of luck to you in your journey!

Ooooh! How are you feeling today? Are you still on the liquid diet? Did the doc make you do a pre-op diet?

Hi I'm feeling great thanks! The postop liquid diet isn't hard at all. You won't feel like wearing or drinking and you have to force yourself to do so. I wasn't required to pre-diet so my last week I ate everything i wanted. I ate so horribly terrible the last week when I went in for lab work my cholesterol and glucose were really high. But all is well now. Keep in touch! Would like to check on your progress I have plenty of tips especially if you are having surgery in Mexico.

Make sure you download Google translate on your phone it makes it easier to communicate with your nurses and do not forget your pillow, you'll need it traveling back home

Awesome!!! I'm glad it's been easy. I'm kinda worried about it and having to take all my broths and shakes to work and people wondering why I'm not eating. I'll have to also make excuses about not joining my co-workers out to lunch on some days! [emoji51]

I was told to do a 2-week pre-op and since that starts Tuesday I might have a good funeral tomorrow (Sunday!) lol. I'm a fluent Spanish-speaker and Tijuana is more like a fun weekend getaway for us in LA so I've been plenty of times. In fact I'm driving myself and my mom there on the morning of surgery. I'll be getting picked up at 6:30am at the US border. I can maneuver my way through Tijuana very easily also, though! I'm looking forward to it!

Since you are a fluent Spanish-speaker you will be just fine in Tijuana. I flew into San Diego and went to Mexicali. I have not told anyone at work what I was doing - I don't plan to tell them because the 1st they will say is, "You are just fine you don't need to do something so drastic!" Only people in my family who know are my mom, husband and two BFF's. My BFF from college had hers done many years ago and I had her full support. I understand being nervous. I was so nervous up until the day of surgery. Please keep me posted! I didn't have anyone to talk to while in Mexicali, I only called my husband and mom the entire time.

Well, I was 180 before I set my surgery date of 4/11. I am now up to 188. My surgeon (cash pay) does not require a pre op diet. I am so ready to get this done! Has anyone else gained a few pounds before their surgery? My BMI was borderline so I am ok with going up a few pounds. I actually just ate normal for the past few weeks with no severe restricted diet that I have lived on my entire life.

I'm having surgery in Tijuana on 4/20. What Dr did you use? I'm going to Dr jaime Ponce de leon at Oasis. I'm also flying into San Diego. I'm not nervous, at least not yet, but I'm really excited. And I ask a lot of questions. Lol! I've heard some people say they have excruciating pain for a couple of days and some say they had none. What did you experience?

I am in a similar situation. 5'5" and 195 pounds with medical issues. My surgery date is May 11. I am glad to see that there are other like minded people who are doing it for a healthier and happier future.

Keep me posted on your progress.

I gained 8 lbs before my surgery because I knew I would not be able to eat certain things so I splurged prior to the surgery date.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
