Has Losing Your Weight Affected Your Heart Rate?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious because my doctor has me on a beta blocker to slow my heart beat down.. he says it sounds like my heart is going to beat out of my chest.. resting rate is like 100-108 beats per minute.. so i'm at high risk of stroke & whatnot.

just curious if anyone else has something similar to me & could answer my question.

thank you for your time! :)

I would say investigate the possibility of a leak if that hasn't already been done. They went over heart rates over and over with me prior to being released. My doc advised me to call him ASAP if my heart rate went up .

oh, that is so sweet that you are concerned about that :) thank you for your suggestion! :)

i don't think i have a leak, but i will ask my doctor about it. :) i was in the ICU for a week a couple years ago from liver failure (because of pharmaceutical error- not my or my doctor's fault).. so they did just about every test on me possible.. and i had x-rays and all sorts of stuff done every couple hours for a week.. from what all the doctors tell me, i'm just so fat that my heart can't keep up & it beats fast to pump the blood to my body parts... basically that my 1 heart is pumping enough blood for 2 or 3 people... and so it beats fast and i have high blood pressure. i am on a beta blocker & a Water pill to reduce my blood pressure & heart rate... i would like to get off this medication.. i hate taking drugs. :/ my doctor also reminds me every time i visit him (which isn't very often-- couple times a year, usually) that i have to lose my weight & he keeps telling me that everything is finite.. i'm wearing all my joints out and my health will deteriorate rapidly & i'll die.. etc.. and keeps telliing me about surgery.. so i'm just looking into it... i've sorta reached the point that i don't care anymore.. :/ about myself, i mean. so.. anyway. yeah. lol i will ask him about the leak, though. thanks for the suggestion. i wouldn't have even thought about that otherwise. :)

Weight loss would help the heart rate. Losing weight helps your heart because it doesn't have to work as hard to pump the blood. So a heart rate of 100 is having to work harder than someone's who is beating at 60 bpm.

I've experienced the opposite effect. My resting heart rate is now in the 50s, and my blood pressure is super low--my cardiologist actually told me to INCREASE the amount of salt I eat--he couldn't even find that button on his electronic medical record to check, since he hadn't had to check that very much!

So I would definitely check a little further into your issue. I think as we lose weight, our hearts shouldn't have to be working as hard. Are you on any kind of medication or are you a caffeine addict? :-) A low-grade infection could also be the culprit, as can hormonal issues like hyperthyroid.

I agree with the others above that a lot of things can affect your heart rate. My resting heart rate has gone down since surgery, possibly because I'm MUCH more active than I was pre-op. I do at least 30 minutes of cardio per day, and I'm in the process of adding time to that number. I see a pulmonologist regularly because I had blood clots and a couple of pulmonary embolisms before surgery. He did an EKG at my last appointment and said that the new readout is "the sexiest thing" because it's so much better than it was a year and 100 pounds ago.

I'm worried because you said you're almost at a point that you don't care about yourself anymore. That's sad to me. I hope you'll find something in your life (either alone or with a therapist's help) that can inspire you to do something for yourself. Every life is worth living and you've got something to offer to others, whether it's a compassionate heart or an inspiring story about how you've survived all your troubles and tribulations. YOU are worth the chance to have a better life!

I know where you're at right now. I was there just over a year ago and I was wondering when I could just die and be done with all the troubles in this life. Now, I'm up and going every day, working, spending time with my friends and family and anticipating what's next for me! I was told that I'd die in a year if I didn't lose some serious weight very quickly. Here I am a year later and my future is literally so bright that I have to wear shades!!! :) Please give yourself this gift! You'll never regret it!

firstly, i'm sorry you're having trouble & i hope you get it sorted out! 50 is indeed pretty low!

i haven't had the surgery yet. i just asked in the post op area, because i figured you folks would know more than the pre-op folks. :)

in regards to your questions, i am on a beta blocker (to slow my heart rate) and hydrochlorothiazide (Water pill).. i'm on the lowest dosage of each.

i used to drink a lot of soda, but i don't drink any anymore... i drink Water or flavored water.. i try to stay away from ecoli poop (aspartame).. so i go with stevia sweetened stuff and MiO (or generic brands).. :)

in regards to hormones, i have pcos... don't have any infections.

you guys really put your thinking caps on, huh? :) i had no idea about all that stuff lol

In many cases it can as well as drop blood pressure but, as stated aboce, your results may vary.

I had a resting heart rate in the 90's pre-op, now it can be as low as the 50's. I have lost so musch weight and become so much more fit.

I wish you luck friend.

I'm 3 weeks post op my heart rate and bp have gone down. I may actually get off the bp meds i was on 3 and now down to one. This surgery can help, but alot of it has to do with dropping the excess weight. I've lost 83 from my highest weight. That was in april.

I had a resting heart rate of 90+ Pre-surgery. It would hit 105 with caffeine or any discomfort. 5 weeks post-op 70 is normal and it is still going down.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
