Goal Weight. - How You Get The Number?

Hello, everyone.

I am new here and still trying to understand a lot of thing.

I would have the surgery in September. and i notice that all of you has Goal weight and some said Person goal weight.

WHO decided what the number should be? Does you doctor said you that?

Mine didn't tell me anything after my first appointment. Might be it would be later on?

My dr and NUT gave me goals based on my height in order to get my BMI within normal weight range.

I have also set my own goals ;-)

I asked my doctor what a healthy weight for me would be. I would love to be skinny but I am more interested in being healthy & realistic. 150 would give me a good BMI.

For some reason, my doctor never gave me a goal weight. His office just asked what MY goal was. At first I said 170 because even though that would still be in the overweight range, I couldn't imagine being any lower. Then after some inner debate, I decided to change it to 150. Hey, if I'm doing this thing, might as well go all the way, right?

I am scared to set my goal below the lowest I can specifically recall being: 180lbs. I remember being that wright (summer between 9th and 10th grade, having starved and bulimia'd myself down to that from about 198). I still felt like the most enormous creature in earth at the time, but when I look at the few pictures of me from that summer, I look, IMO, quite normal. Maybe a tiny bit pudgy.

My doctor suggested I would probably get down to around 130lbs........I'm sorry I can't see it. I cannot even recall when I might have weight that.....it must have 5th/6th grade or something! So I'm afraid if I set my sights too low, and don't get there I will feel like a failure. My way of combatting that is too start with a higher goal and adjust as/if necessary when I reach it.

i looked on my chart printout they give me and the goal weight they have for me is 130...i think my left leg weighs about that much on its own. that number is just way too low for me to get my head around.

I have a goal weight to be between 130 and 160. Right now I'm 260. At my smallest pant size I was an 8 and I weighed around 175. But I was working out a lot. For me the goal is be lead a healthier life and to have more self confidence with my appearance. I'm going to try and not focus on what the scale says

I looked at the BMI chart and chose the highest weight I could be and still be in the normal range. I had actually hoped to get smaller but found that once I got there, my body just didn't want to lose any more weight. I'll get to my "wishful thinking" goal of living in the 120s after plastics, I'm sure.

My goal seemed insanely low to me since I hadn't been this weight since junior high but I kept at it and got here.

Some people exceed their personal goals because their bodies are happier at a smaller weight than they can wrap their heads around. Some of us have bodies that stop when they want, and it might be right at our goal or even a little higher. I can maintain 134-136 but my body loves the number 138 and wants to stay between 138-140 so I have to keep an eye on the scale or it will stick there. :)

The actual formula for deciding ideal weight (for women) is 100 pounds for the first 5', and 3 pounds for every inch more. To fine tune this number, follow the directions below for measuring your elbow width. (This is more accurate than your wrist, especially if you're overweight). After you've determined frame size, adjust the ideal weight by adding (to the above formula) 1.5 pounds per inch for a medium frame, and 2 pounds per inch for a large frame.

Directions: Place arm parallel to the floor, straight out from shoulder, palm up. Bend arm up 90 degrees. Using calipers (or help from someone) measure the distance between the centers of the two prominent bones behind the point of your elbow. Be sure to center on the bones. Using that measurement, compare to the chart below. If your measurement falls within the guidelines listed for your height, you have a medium frame. If it is less, you are small-framed, and if more, you are large framed.

Having said that, like Cheri points out, our bodies sometimes have a "happy weight" that pays no attention whatsoever to our wish for an ideal weight. :P

I've just learned I have a small frame. Something I didn't know.

I am 277lbs right now ( 5'7"). but I always knew that I have a big ones. so when I check that my normal weight suppose to be 145lbs I just think it is impossible so when I filled out the doctor paper I just decided to go with top range for ideal weight. which is 160.

I still not sure that I am ever would be able to go down so far. even on my wedding I weighted 168 after 6 months diet.

Looking at you girl sometimes i think that might be it is possible to get 145 but..... dream dream dream.....

You're headed in the right direction, and the final destination isn't in sight yet. You never know, Scorpion509 - a complete lifestyle change real does change everything. Thankfully. ;)

My doctor's office has a scale that weighs your lean body mass (i.e. stuff you don't want to lose). I have 155 lbs of lean body mass, so there's no way I can get down to 140 lbs, which is what my BMI says I should be.

My goal right now is 180 and if I get down any lower than that, that's great.

I have that type of scale at home and I never pay attention to the lean mass. always of FAT. but I opened it now and do you know what I saw. my lean mass numbers between 128-140lbs.

O MY GOD.... I don't' want even think how many fat I have :) but I always saw that it is 53-59% of fat. just never really think about it.

I was asked what weight I would like to be I said I don’t know just smaller and healthy not thought about it nor do I have anything in mind.

They said that’s fine it’s the best way to be and that was the end of that.

My ticker says 190 I just put that in there because I truly have no goal weight I will know what looks right on my body when I get to it and I will be fine with whatever it is.

I personally believe in setting attainable goals. I personally would set a goal at the high end of normal for my body type. Then once that goal is attained you can Celebrate and use the motivation to evaluate where you are an maybe decide that you want to lose another 10 or 15lbs or not. Absolutely nothing wrong with setting multiple goals.
