Has Anyone Gotten Ulcers From Drinking Coffee?

Recommended Posts

so I tried to kick the habit twice already because my surgeon and NUT insist that I give it up because it causes ulcers. I quit twice but my energy level got so low that I could not function. Honestly, I do not want to work or do anything, just sleep or watch tv. Yesterday my energy was so low, to the point that I almost fell asleep during a meeting, that I decided that just for that day I will drink it... WELL! after drinking my coffee, I completed all my reports (due at the beginning of the month), ran with my dog and went to Home Depot after work. I have not had the energy to work out and after coffee I ran!

I just don't understand how or why I need coffee to keep me going. My quality of life improves so much when I am on caffeine. I have almost convinced myself that having an ulcer would be worth it if I could just have the energy I get from coffee.

Have any of you experience this?

For those who have been sleeved for over a year, do you drink coffee and have you gotten an ulcer?

Does anyone have any experience with getting energy from certain types of foods w/out caffeine?

FYI: I take all my Vitamins and I sleep 7-8 hours a night.

Thanks in advance for your help.

No not at all, I tried to stop but I love the taste too much and I don't think it's caused by drinking coffee. .

I thought ulcers were caused by bacterial infection and not coffee, spicy foods or stress. I am drinking coffee withou incident.

Seriously... I almost cried when I read this! Wow, I am desperate. This must be how drug addicts feel.. Hehehe :)

My NUT told me that I could have caffeine free coffee before and after surgery. I am 9 weeks out and she now says that I can have my caffeine back in my coffee only. I asked her what the big deal is, and she said that the caffeine is basically dehydrating (sorry..can't remember her fancy medical term) and I will need to increase my Water by one cup if I drink regular coffee. Oh darn. I'm more than willing to drink an extra glass of water for that coffee in the morning. lol.

You know, my nut said that she knew someone who got an ulcer and after investigating it was because she was taking Vitamin (or type of pill cant remember) that had caffeine in it. She also mentioned the irritation. I am with Kaiser and they are extremely conservative when it comes to stuff like this. Sorry Kaiser, I cannot give it up.

Thanks for posting me! :)

As much water as I drink, dehydration should not be an issue! Yay, this is sounding better each post. Thanks!

Just FYI, I ask here because I know my nut and surgeon will speak to me in a condescending tone and tell me how I shouldn't do it! I wish they understood me better...

I totally understand. I have followed every single rule that they have set for me. Getting sleeved should not mean the end of all the things that made us happy. I can deal without the grease and junk food. I get that it will get me nowhere, but caffeine, COME ON doc!!! I'm not going to OD on it when the only time I consume it is through coffee. Funny story (speaking of condescending)....I asked my NUT when I could start having the occassional glass of wine. She literally looked down her nose at me and said, "We will talk about that at your next appointment, but you must remember that alcohol is nothing but empty calories." I wanted to look at her and say, "well so is Water, but you sure want me guzzling 64 oz of that crap a day!" Besides, I don't think there was ever a time in my life where I drank a beer because of how HEALTHY it was. DUH!! :P

I have never heard about not having caffeine. My doctor must just be super lenient. I got very little instruction past at 4 weeks I could eat normal food. Anyway, all I drink all day is tea. Earl Grey and good ole Lipton iced tea - I'm nit dehydrated Guess I should ask at my next appt! I'm feeling a tiny bit paranoid that I've been doing the wrong thing!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
