Oh Diet Coke, How I've Missed Thee...

I'm 9 days post-op and have been having a really tough time of it. Hard to get fluids down, hard to drink those stupid Protein shakes. I so miss my Diet Coke - some people smoke, some people do drugs, drink alcohol - I do none of that, I just like my Diet Coke.

So today, I took one of my caffeine free Diet Cokes (when home, I always drank caffeine free), opened the bottle to let out some fizz, poured it over ice in a glass, and took small sips. It was like drinking a little glass of heaven. No stomach upset and I feel almost like a normal person again. No caffeine, lost a lot of the carbonation, and when the ice melts down, I'm even getting some extra water!

It's amazing how this diet can make a person so miserable at times, but the little things we took for granted before can make a world of difference now with just a little modification (I would chug all fizzy from the bottle :)).

Oh I'm also an astronaut ballerina with a PhD from the local clown college and when I smoke crack I always let it sit out for awhile and then mix it with egg whites. More protein less carbs! Dammit I

Confession- I took a SIP of my daughters diet Dr. Pepper while we were out to eat. Oohhh man it was heaven!! I just let the bubbles touch my tongue and that was it! I smiled like crazy, it was so funny to see lol. I think that moment of funny happiness was well worth it. It didn't make me need/want it any more or less. It was just a teaser for my mouth and it was perfect!

Feel free to spank me now :P

I drink a big red and dr pepper everyday!! Can't drink the whole 12oz but I try!. Have never had problems and still losing!! :) Enjoy and do you!!

I was a BIG diet wild cherry pepsi drinker. Couldn't get my day going without it. I had it up until my 24 hr Clear liquids before surgery.

Strange thing is after surgery I haven't needed (yet). Not sure if the craving will come back. My dr recommendation is 6 mths.

I totally understand being the same amount of days post op as you. I feel kind of like I'm living outside of my body. We wouldn't be human if we didn't try to make some normalcy out of this experience.

Everyone has had different pre op diets, post op diets, NUT and surgeon recommendations. It would be hard for me to comment on specific do's and don'ts. I see such a broad spectrum of what everyone can and can't do. I have to say I am secretly wishing to get to past the liquids stage ;-).

I like this site for the comments, opinions (good or bad) and seeing everyone's journey.

In the end I think the OP was merely sharing a moment where they felt "normal". This experience admittedly is difficult on everyone

that heads down this path. We all are aiming for the same thing...to extend our lives and strive to be healthier!

I figured this is a new healthy lifestyle for me and the chemicals in diet coke don't mix with that. So I've given it up completely. A side effect of that? My teeth look FABULOUS!

I could not agree with you MORE! No room for crap in my lifestyle Amy longer! If I'm going healthy- I'm going 100%!!!

Adult' date=' professional, three degrees, & still haven't figured out that if you post on a public forum, you are likely to get responses? Even a few that you don't want to hear. I'm guessing that you don't actually make into a courtroom very often if a post on a public forum gets you this bent out of shape.[/quote']

Lmao! Love it!

I was a diet coke-a-holic of the worst kind. I don't even come close to missing it now. Sodas don't exist anymore. That stuff will rot the guts right out of you! Our itty bitty stomachs must be protected!

Now there's a SMART girl! ;)

Well if only we had all this conviction and smart thinking while putting tons of crap in our bodies and becoming obese.

Yay for our new tool!

Here's to everyone's successes and all the ups, downs, and in betweens we face every day :)

before I volunteer. you are female, Right?

LOL... Yes I am female :)

Here's the thing: We are not all going to agree with each other, period. That's the beauty of being human - we all have our own thoughts, beliefs and realities.

If your surgeon said it was okay, then good for you! I miss my diet coke like crazy, myself.

But please remember that not everyone is going to think it's okay because of their own personal thoughts, beliefs, and realities (as stated above). Just ignore the posts you don't like and acknowledge the ones you do.

As for me and my DC addiction, I quit long before surgery because my family and I are transitioning to a natural foods lifestyle. This was a personal choice. After reading some of the ingredients that go into diet drinks and sugar substitutes, I was so scared about what I was putting into my body that I chose to get rid of it for good.

Good luck on your journey!

I wasn't mean and I wasn't rude, you posted you drank diet coke 9 days out from surgery. Not 9 weeks, 9 days out, good luck to you. If you end up with a leak, or posting in 2 weeks about the stall I'll try to remember not to offer any advice, whether or not it's asked for.

As much as I love and miss my drink of choice (orange Fanta) I just can't do it. I can't sabotage my progress and certainly not my 1 month old sleeve not to mention my sexy curves that I'm starting to see! That Fanta is so not worth it.

Nevertheless, folks, if you post something on here expect a response whether it's for what you wrote or against what you wrote, and that's the "skinny" on that!

Gotta go look at myself in the mirror! Lol

I was a diet coke freak before my surgery. I would go to Sonic in the morning before work and again after work, both for the Route 44, and in between those times would fill my empty cups with more Diet Coke. I knew having this surgery would break me of my addiction, and I'm thankful it did. I have been putting so much garbage in my stomach. After this surgery and everything I've been through these past 9 days, I do not plan on putting it back in my system. I'm not saying I will never have another diet coke, but it will not be my first drink of choice anymore. This has been a difficult addiction for me to break, but I've made it 10 days without. I'm hoping and praying for a healthier me, and I hope that's why everyone else is on here, too. It's hard, and we need to help each other the best we can.

i keep coming back to this thread and it makes me shake my head as a newbi it also makes me want to watch what I post honestly- what if I slip up and say I did and that’s it its full on your stupid get help tut tut bad girl?!

I just want to say to no one in particular

diet/zero soda ARE liquids they are mainly Water which you CAN drink in the liquid stage of the diet so frankly the day after the op you can drink it if its flat.

Yes it happens to be fizzy unless you let it go flat, and yes it has alot of empty calories and some crap and crappy sweeteners but its still Fluid.

Some of us have been told while it’s not ideal BECAUSE of the crap and empty calories in it but we can still drink it if its flat.

Its in my paperwork on the pre and post op diets that I can drink it how it comes pre and flat post right there in black and white just because some of your were not told that doesn’t mean your right and we are wrong or vice versa!

i mean god I was told not to drink tea or coffee or full fat milk all they give me in hospital was tea with full fat milk!

I don’t get why people are jumping so hard on a person assuming he is chugging gallons of fizzy soda and dismissing everything told to him and being told in not so many words he is gonna stay fat or get fat again or going to stall so tough luck and we warned you!

That’s pretty shitty to me honestly its like a bunch of ex smokers who go around telling you how bad it is for you all the time when they smoked 80 a day!

Yeah we want support yeah we offer support where we can but frankly I am over the tutters and shamers!

Please do not tell me not one of you tasted, licked, nibbled, drank a single thing you shouldn’t have since the op or never ever will for the rest of your life!

No one is that perfect weather its alcohol a sweet treat takeaway whatever there is bound to be a slip somewhere along the lines no one is perfect and there is a reason within all of us that we got to the point of needing this in the first place!

I think people who have been out longer than others forget their old life their habits and mindset. (not everyone just some i have seen around the forum)

How hard it is sometimes to adjust and forget the head cravings or the emotional ones of just years and years of ingrain habit instead they are all knowing and just preach to the new people and scold them like kids.

I have seen posts on this forum what people eat in the first week out and yes I shake my head and say F’ing hell!

But I also know each person has their own struggles and own ways of rebelling in frustration and own demons with food and its pretty safe to say self sabotage.

You don’t get to the stage we are at and not have tried diets and healthy eating before this is a brand new way of life some learn quickly some take longer some have more issues to work out before they get it but throwing digs and coming down on people not at your stage or not doing exactly what you did just hurts the person more than it helps.

Say your concerned say they shouldn’t do it in your opinion, don’t get mean and personal and snide it doesn’t help anyone.
