Surgery 8/1, Dreading Pre-Op Diet And New App

Recommended Posts

My pre surgical meeting is 8/14, I need to at least start my liquids no later than 8/7, I was a told something similar but it was so vague. I tried the slim fast shakes, they are pretty good. I just don't think 2 or 3 a days is going to do that job.

I started weaning off the "bad" stuff the last week of June, so starting liquids yesterday has been ok. I wasn't required to start until the 23rd, but I'm all about starting diets on Monday, I started 2 days early. ;) I have surgery on August 1, so only 7 more days to go.

I had a headache and was a bit grouchy yesterday. :/ Today was much better but I've been a little more hungry. You ladies that are doing this for 2+ weeks are my heros!!! Keep up the good work and remember, this is only temporary.

2 Corinthians 12:9

"My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

My surgery date is 8/23, my coordinator who I also work with says I need to lose 20 lbs. How they hell is this possible.

I had surgery 6/29 and I did the Atkins diet for 2 weeks for my pre op diet (liver shrinking diet). I lost 19 lbs in that short amount of time! I couldn't believe it! You got this girl!

So today was day 1 of my pre op diet...and the night isn't over yet. I've managed to stay on track, but this is the hardest part of the day/night for me. Home, sitting in front of the TV relaxing. I want something salty and crunchy. I got my activity in already, so I'm ready to chill. Drinking my "dinner" and wondering how the heck I am going to get through the next 12 days. I know I will, but right now it feels like time is ticking by super slow.

I am not thrilled with the Protein powder shakes, but overall, they are not the worst things I've ever tasted. The program I am on requires me to buy all their products - but the upside is that it will be enough Protein Shakes and bars to last for the 2 week pre op and then an additional 4+ weeks after surgery. Plus all my chewable Vitamins and supplements

On to day #2 tomorrow!!

My surgery date is 8/23' date=' my coordinator who I also work with says I need to lose 20 lbs. How they hell is this possible. I was thinking about starting my pre surgery liquid diet on 8/1 to give myself time to get use to just liquid. Does anybody else have to lose weight, if so, are you exercising? Did anyone get the surgery without pre op weight loss. Im just scared that I won't lose the weight and this would be all done in vein. Exactly what is everyone drinking since she just gave me a few options verbally. broth, SF Jello, Water, like a fool I got a pen and paper thinking she was going to give me a list. YEAH NO!!! I just feel lost anyone have any suggestions.[/quote']

Hey skboone1. My dietician said that I should strive for 80-100 grams of Protein and 600-800 calories per day during my 2 week pre-op diet. So, I'm drinking a lot of Protein shakes. I like the smoothie king gladiator with no fruit.< /p>

I feel for you @nalasmom!! Graveyard shift sounds horrendous. I am on day #2 w/ my shakes. I'm allowed some veggies, so I have been crunching on a LOT of carrots. Maybe this pre oop diet will help w/ my eyesight.

I hate wishing time away, but I'm SO ready for it to be August already!!

Thanks for the suggestions! I started off motivated this morning but the cravings are beginning to kick in!

I have to keep reminding myself my reasons for doing this and that time is going to go by fast. Whew, is it 8/1 yet?

Hi, everyone.

I thought that I am the only one who decided to try pre op diet before it really needed. but I was wrong :)

I spin the wheel yesterday. I went to the doctor and now I feel stupid because I don't know a lot of thing.

WHY we need to make liver smaller in size. I mean what is the reason for pre op diet.

Hi Scorpion,

I am a big "why person" as well. I knew I had to figure out the reason for the pre-op diet in order to be able to sucessfully stick to it. Here is you answer and some addtl info provided by my Dr's office:

Because the liver lies over the area of the stomach where we are doing most of your surgery, you may be asked to lose some weight before your surgery. The weight loss will help shrink the liver and make the surgery easier, faster, and safer for you and the surgeon.

Pre-Surgery Diet:

1. Begin a liquid diet one week prior to surgery. You may consume any liquids

that are not high in calories (NO MILKSHAKES).

2. Begin Protein and Vitamin supplements at least one week prior to surgery.

You can find these by going to our website and ordering.

www.drwbarker.com

3. Drink a minimum of 64 oz of fluids per day.

4. Stop Plavix, Asprin, and anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. anything

containing Salicylic Acid, Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn,

Celebrex, Vioxx, Bextra, etc.) – 10 days prior to surgery. Tylenol products

are acceptable

The more informed you are the more comfortable you will be with your decision. Good luck! :)

Whew, I'm glad today is almost over, I've been starving all day. I know day 3 would be bad from doing the HCG diet, but my tummy has been growling like crazy! Only 6 more days to go. 0_o

Oh boy, tomorrow is day 3 for me. So much to look forward to - not! I think it must be in my head, but I am super tired. I can't imagine that after only 2 days of doing this diet that it would effect me so quickly. But maybe that is the case. I so want to eat something crunchy and salty. Probably easier to just go to bed and forget about it. For me, only 11 more days to go. Whoo hooo!!! :D

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
