Recommended Posts

Monday I have my psych evaluation and pulmonary pre op.

What was the sleep study like? How long were u there? Overnight? Can I bring a fan? Haha, not sure I can sleep without it.

Thanks!

The sleep study will be the easiest test you'll take. Ha! They let me bring my white noise machine, so you might be able to get away with a fan. They will wire you up and then monitor your breathing, or lack there of, while you sleep. If you have severe apnea, they may wake you to try a CPAP machine right away, or you may need to go back for a CPAP study. If you're really lucky... you will be apnea free. I am not so lucky (for now). They usually send you home around 6 or 7am. Good luck!

Thanks, I hope I can sleep with all the wires. I turn a lot because of hip and back pain. How much can u move?

I'm a side sleeper, and honestly didn't feel like I slept much at all. And yet... they determined that I stopped breathing 54 times an hour. :( I won't say it is easy, but if you don't stress out about having to pee as soon as you're hooked up, you'll probably be okay. Ha!

Oh! Take whatever you need for good rest... I didn't think of it for the first test, but for the second test I brought three pillows and my white noise machine.

The wires are pretty lengthy, so you can move pretty well... but there never long enough to get to the bathroom. (are you sensing a theme here?)

I was able to bring my fan. just call an confirm that you can. they want you to be as comfortable as possible so you go into a deep sleep where the test is most accurate. The wires are pretty long. i am a stomach sleeper and had to adjust to my side. i woke up a little tangled but the tech. helps un-tangle me and even had to come in during the night to re-attach a wire on my leg. You will be fine! Good luck!

I just had the second sleep study done last night with the CPAP machine. The first night was not bad for me. Yes the wires are uncomfortable, theres a lot of them so be prepared for that. One of the most annoying parts is the bees wax they use to stick the controllers to your scalp. It's thick and annoyingt to get out (someone mentioned hot oil being helpful to get out of your hair, or I guess any kind of oil) You should call and ask about the fan, my center was pretty accomadating and allowed me to bring food and things to drink. They have cable TV usually so that's nice. A tip I HIGHLY recomend it make sure your dog tired when you go in. The first time I stayed up all night so I was exhausted when I went it. It went pretty well (about as well as something like this can go lol)

The second test- last night- when I should have made sure I was even more tired because of the CPAP machine- I didn't have the luxary of staying up all night the night before and I had the hardest time ever sleeping, So just make sure your tired.

I have to go in for a consultation next month. They gave me paperwork to fill out. My husband, who has apnea and snores like a bandsaw, said there is no way I could have it. His snoring keeps me up, and I do wake up in the middle of the night if I eat to closely to bedtime, have more than 1 glass of wine or have one of those lovely hot flashes. I am hoping that if they want to further investigate, they will send me home with one of those machines to hook up and let me do it at home. I have the hardest time sleeping away from home.

I had my sleep study about 2 weeks ago. I did not enjoy sleeping with all of those wires and probes on me. There was a fan already on in my room, so I didn't have to worry about that. I did have to get up one time to go to the restroom, but it wasn't too bad. I didn't feel like I slept hardly at all, but, apparently I was sleeping well most of the night (according to the results). I don't have sleep apnea, and I knew I didn't (I don't have ANY of the symptoms and my husband has it, so we know what it is like). The hardest thing for me was the tubes they put in my nose and the probe on my throat. They were really uncomfortable. I just went home and went to sleep after my study. I'm SO glad I didn't have to work the next day or anything. They say you have to be monitored for at least 6 hours. I was there for about 9 hours total.

I just had my sleep study last night. Think it went well. Had two dreams, I am told. It was like a hotel room and very peaceful. Even a full bathroom. Brought a fan to sleep. Worked well. Was able to easily roll over in bed, but had wires all over me. Glad I came in a bit tired.

I did not like the nose and throat wires either. I think I slept lighter than I do at home. Was there from 830 pm to about 0630 am. Of course, my brain waves told the guy I woke up at 0600. :o

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
