Just banded 8/30 and Nauseous

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm Fred, first let me explain, it was my wife that was just banded. I have been educating myself through this amazing website since she first started exploring banding, and it was a HUGE help when talking to the doctor to know the right questions and understand what to expect (Thank you all).

My wife (Kim) was banded in the AM and by evening was doing laps around the hospital (slowly) by evening she felt a lot of back pain and gas but had a great attitude (meds helped the pain) anyway she came home yesterday and was immediately overwhelmed with nausea and she vomited a little. she seems to get mild hiccups that make her feel sick. I talked to the doctor and have a plan as to when I might need to take her back to the Hosp. She kept down about 16 oz of Water overnight. Any similar experiences out there? She really does not want to go back to the Hospital but I'm not going to let her take any chances.

Thanks again for an awesome site.

Fred

I agree with Jack - the pain meds could be the problem. Strange as it seems, being nauseated post band surgery is not commen.

At her stage, many bandsters are only taking liquid tylenoyl for pain. Also, she may need a little more substance in her tummy to help it settle down - try a small yogurt milkshake from McDonalds. A small one is not going to hurt! Actually, those things saved my life a few times.

Hope its not a stomach bug!

My friend was sick to her stomach afterwards from the pain meds also. I think your best bet would be to see what the Dr. says she could do.

Best of luck to her and I hope she gets well soon.

Some people are very sensative to anesthesia and it can take a few days to completely get it out of your system. Taking prescription pain meds can make it worse.

There is a new drug called ZOFRAN sub-lingual 4 mg. You take it and put it under your tongue and it dissolves with no bad taste. Your MD could call a Rx in for your wife.

If she continues to vomit today... call the surgeon.

I can vouch for the zofran, it works very well. In fact, I have a known history of nausea and vomiting after surgery, so my doctor sent me home with it. I took it and had no vomiting at all.

I hope she gets to feeling better soon. And I hope she knows how lucky she is in having such a wonderful, caring and supportive husband such as yourself.

I just remembered that I had some kind of sticker they put behind my ear to help with the nausea. I got to leave it on for a few days I believe?

Glad to hear she is better!!!

The Zofran is good, BUT have your wallet ready!! My prescription was $714.99 for 30 pills!!!!!!! Thank goodness I have insurance, so it only cost $158!! I still vomited a little after taking Zofran, which REALLY made me sick! Very expensive throw up! My nausea lasted for a week, and I've talked to several others who had the same problem. It does get better!!!!

Wow, I only paid $75.00 for my zofran. I would have passed out if I paid $158.00. But then again, I paid $16,500.00 for the surgery, so what is another couple of hundred bucks to make sure I don't vomit myself into a slipped band?

Thanks to you all! Thank God, the nausea stopped and now it just seems to be gas and back pain. I shouldn't say "just" to her pain, but compared to how bad she looked Friday this is relatively minor. She has been walking the neighborhood (seems to relieve the pain)

I had surgery on 8/23/06 and my gas pain was in my shoulder. What help to relieve the pain was walking, non weight bearing upper body workout, warm fluids, and no cold liquids but it took 10 days to resolve.

Hey Wife support...I had the same thing. It was the pain meds for me too. I'm glad your wife is doing better and each day it gets better and better. Good luck with recovery and it's great that you're supporting her on this. My husband has been my best friend through all of this and let me tell you....I'll always remember him being supportive of me and helping me with this decision. Amazing what he's learned in regards to how to eat etc himself. He's lost 36 pounds just piggybacking my lapband surgery and eating the way I do or we share meals because I can't eat alot. I guess my taking a small portion of his helps him keep his portions in check etc :) Good luck with everything!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
