Another Canadian, eh

Recommended Posts

I've been hanging about the site for about a week now because I am about to be banded, and I want to learn as much as I can from people who are walking the walk and talking the talk. The site is supportive, interesting, and lots of fun. I've learned a lot about this business of being banded, the fills, and what to expect post-op. This is why I decided to join. I am less frightened about the operation now, but more freaked out about the fills; the procedure sounds a little gross.

Hiya Green and welcome to the Canuck Threads!

:canada: :canada: :canada: :welcome2:

So, when, where and by whom are u getting banded?

Don't worry about the fills....I actually had a problem with one of my fills but despite my problem, I'm not worried and it truly isn't that bad.....a pinch is worse! I've had 4 of 'em now. Piece of cake!!

MMMmmmm piece of cake!!! :hungry:

oops sorry...got off topic there!

Anyways, welcome...and you are doing the right thing by doing as much research and getting informed as much as you can in advance!

Hi Yoda,

I read your stuff and was really amused. You had the X-ray fill, right? That sounded like the best way of having it done.

I am getting banded by The Toronto Lap Band Centre down on Prince Arthur. Although I am looking forward to this - I am getting fatter and fatter since I hit post-menopausal land - most people I know are very negative about this choice. It seems that no one is happy to see me take this step except for my husband who loves me the way I am but is always supportive of me. As for me, I am fed up with the lard. There have been nights when I have been up at three o'clock in the morning, and I've thought to myself that if there were emergency liposuction clinics, I would phone a cab and be there.

Hello Green and welcome, congratulations on your decision, you wont regret it. I was also nervous about getting my first fill, but you know what it was a piece of cake, I worried for nothing, a needle into the port the saline in, all over in a couple of minutes.

Maria:)

Thanx, Irish.

Here is something that may sound kinda strange. I don't actually know my weight. I stopped weighing myself when I was 24 or 25, and when other people (like doctors) weigh me I tell them that I don't want to know. I figure that I am fat because I shop in the fat grrl's stores. The regular sizes don't fit me.

You two, quit talking about cake:cake: mmmmmmmm.

Welcome green, you will not regret your choice. Don't be nervous, just be excited. TLBC is awesome, and your support team (us) is awesome, too ......LOL...just goof'n around. Honestly, the fills are no big deal.

I've got another question. I was just on the general site, and it was suggested that newbies should introduce themselves there. Is it a good idea or not? What do you think, my fellow Canuckis?

When I first came to this site a few months back, there was barely anyone on this Canadian thread. I got all my questions answered on the main forum. There were sooooo many wonderful americans there to help me. We can help you here, but sometimes the question is one that you might want more ideas or input. They have a whole lot more people on there threads. I still like to visit and post, but I feel at home here.

Hey Green....nahhh you don't need to introduce yourself....just post away on any thread ya want! I agree with Cloe...I still go to the other ones to get info if required (not as much as when I was pre-op)...the search button is handy too.

I was banded at TLBC as well. Next Thurs! That is great! It is normal to be excited and nervous so don't worry about that.

I'm sorry you don't have more support..that is part of the reason I didn't really tell anyone. (just Mr. Yoda...obviously and my parents who live far far far away!) Anyways....don't worry about the fact "they" aren't supportive of your decision....the only one that you need to worry about is yourself (& your husband of course!). You are doing it for YOU not them!

Make sure you actually track your weight....it will help a lot to measure your progress...in terms of motivation. Just make sure you try not to weigh yourself more than once a week (because you aren't used to it, you may only want to do it once a month even!). Also, I found it VERY helpful to take measurements in inches of my chest, waist, hips, right thigh, right calf and right bicep. Because even if the lbs do down slow or stall, you will likely still see a loss in inches and that is highly motivating. I take those measurements once a month (along with photos of my nakedness!). I find it very helpful. Mr Yoda does this along with me.

GOOOOOD LUCK!!!!!

Are you on a pre-op diet? If not...yay you!! If so...keep it up, only one more week left!

I guess by this point I better tell you all who I am. You already know my age because I decided to not stay in the closet about it.:clap2: Since I was 35 I've been earning my living building aircraft. I work with mostly with men, there are very few women on the floor, and this is where I met my husband. Actually, we are common-law but we've been together for twenty years. Before I started my life as a blue collar grrl, l lived in France for a few years, and before that I worked in university administration. The last 3 years I have been off work for depression, though. This is something that runs, gallops actually, in my family.:) As for my family, some of us are fat, and some are not. I am one of the unlucky ones, I guess.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
