Intolerance Vs. Dumping?

Recommended Posts

Here I am with another gross question, guys...forgive me. I'm now going to tell you about poop.

I never had a problem with lactose in my old life at all. Or, frankly, during the liquid part of the stages. I've been on pureed for a week. Today for Breakfast I made a chocolate Protein shake with 1 tbsp of Peanut Butter, and some frozen bananas, and milk. About halfway through the morning, I found myself in the restroom. I didn't think much of it, since I'm still in the 'not really all that regular stage'. For lunch I had 3 oz. of potato puree I made. When I got home from work, I grabbed a quick snack of some cottage cheese and apple butter (maybe 1.5 oz or so), before I took my dog to the park with a friend, and on the way home, I had to run to her house, or I would have had an accident.

I'm concerned that a) I'm now lactose intolerant, because, frankly, pureed food involves a lot of dairy, and B) I freaking love cheese. Also, B) was that dumping? I can't believe the cottage cheese zipped through me THAT fast? It was maybe 2 hours. Any experience with this hideousness?

I don't know about lactose intolerance, but I have had a few bouts of "dumping" and it didn't take two hours to process. It happened pretty fast and it was terribly painful and involved the sweats as well.

Someone else might be able to tell you about lactose intolerance time frames.

Don't give up hope though, because what we cannot tolerate at one point may become tolerable later!

I have that problem now with some milk products. I had surgery in March and if i drink milk i have to run to the bathroom in where from 30 min to an hour. I had problems with cottage cheese in the beginning but am ok with it now for the most part. I still can't do milk i keep trying it but no luck yet. I have started using Soy milk instead. Never had any problem with any cheeses.

i am 3 years out and it's finally gone away. I can drink an entire glass of milk again.

Get yourself some lactaid, and some Imodium. You will be glad.

Hm. Well, I will switch to using soy or almond milk for cooking right now (which won't be too much of a problem, as my sister can't drink it, and my mom's pretty much a vegan)...but it's good to know that we can stomach lactaid and imodium. This trial and error business...oy.

I have this same issue too with all dairy and whey based Proteins. Immodium has become my life saver! Lactaid doesnt seem to help me either :(

It's messed up that whey was fine, and now it's not. Ugh.

I couldn't do even Lactaid, so introduce it slowly if you use it, and Immodium only made me feel worse (horrible gas pains), so whatever you try do it in moderation and be careful until you know how you'll react. I do soy milk and it's great. I was fine for a few weeks post op, or at least I didn't put two and two together until I was on purees and soft foods. Then it hit me and I had to cut out all of my dairy for a while. For the longest time I could only tolerate hard cheeses in very small portions.

For me the symptoms were very painful (and TMI, but horribly stinky) gas, all-day nausea if I consumed dairy, a rumbling belly and of course, the diarrhea.

I had to switch Protein shakes, cut out all dairy except small portions of hard cheeses and move to soy milk.

Around one year out I started trying dairy again and found that cheese wasn't much of a problem. I'll be two years out in a few weeks and I can now eat most dairy in moderation. I can have one or two servings a day but I still cannot drink any milk. So, I can have a splash of cream in my coffee and be okay, and have one serving of yogurt but if I have any more dairy that day I'll be sick. I live somewhere I can't find cottage cheese but I'm definitely trying that again as soon as I'm stateside. So even if it is lactose intolerance there's a good chance you'll won't be saying goodbye to all dairy forever.

Thanks, Cheri!

Could you give me a recommendation of a Protein Shake mix that's not whey-based, and not gross? I'm not making my Protein mark, and need to find a good shake. I'm testing the waters with dairy to see if it was the fat content of my dairy (I had 2% milk and whole cottage cheese), to see if that helps, but I don't really want to use Imodium...I always had bad gas pains with that. Lactaid I may try...I really hope I'm not lactose intolerant though. This is definitely a lot of change...:o

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
