I'm older than most of you and gout runs in my family so that's two strikes against me. I was diagnosed with it last week. I don't eat the stuff usually associated with it (liver, booze, etc) but you can get it from too much Protein (my surgery was about 6 months ago). So I'm dipping down from 70 grams per day to 60, and cutting out any red meat. Just a warning ... if your foot begins to really hurt, this could be the problem for you, too.

but you can get gout from too much Protein

LBM

I've also suffered with gout

thats very interesting what you said about too much Protein being a problem. I never heard that before.

Do to my diabetes, i see my podiatrist every 10 weeks., insurance covers my toe nails being cut, but no manicure

I know there are certain foods i shouldn't eat. Don't remember what though :(

the protein thing sounds important, so i will definitely talk to my dr. about.

thanx for the info

the more weight I lose the better/less chance that gout will occur :)

serenekolaski

I seriously never knew that weight loss would decrease the chance of getting gout.

One more benefit to losing weight with the help of our infamous sleeve :)

weight loss effects so many different health issues.

according to my mother, if i would lose more weight, i wouldn't get a hangnail

thanx

I have been on the preop diet for about 3 weeks. I have had gout in the past and now with all the Protein I am having a flare up in the arch of my foot and I really am starting to ache all over. This is horrible. I heard cherries help ( fresh or dried).

This is very definitely something to talk with your surgeon about PRE surgery. Are you taking maintenance meds for gout now? Maybe she'll start you on them. I am doing better now but staying even more hydrated, but we're all so different. Let me know ... I'll be thinking about you.

I'm a young'un and I had gout POST surgery. My surgeon says its common or at least not unusual. I thinks it's caused by the combination of surgery trauma, dehydration, and starvation. My PCP gave me colchicine and it hasn't flared up again, but I'm still dealing with some residual pain and mobility issues.

If you are using whey protien, the protien is not the culprit. I also suffer from gout,

Unfortunately, it is an effect that comes from rapid weight loss. It triggers a gout attack.

You can get tart Cherry juice at your local health food store, it will help, but remember it is high in sugar so, don't drink a lot at one time.

Also you can get a Uric Aid cleanse in capsulet form.

The good news here is, with our new lifestyle and eating habits, once you flush the excess Uric acid from your system gout should just be a bad memory.

Edit: just notice you are pre op, disregard the statement about limiting the cherry juice, and if you are getting protien from red meat that can definately be a contributing factor. But, whey contains no Uric acid. Also, are you a drinker, because drinking alcohol also contributes to gout.

I have been using whey Protein. I have also been eating chicken and tuna. I quit drinking almost 2 months ago. I got the cherry juice and raw apple cider vinegar and it has helped. Gotta lay off that though because the label says stop 2 weeks before surgery. I will call my nurse in the morning. Thx for your response.

Now that I am post op the gout is from hell. I have not had an attack like this in many years. It laughs at cherry juice. On alpurinol and steroids. If this doesn't work I may need to have my foot removed.

I agree it SUCKS!! And it was the worst attack I've had, but keep in mind this could very well be tha last gout attack you ever experience. When mine hit I was eating naproxen like candy for two weeks just so it wouldn't throb even staying off of it. Just keep up on the uric acid cleanse. My feet feel better now than anytime in my memory.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
