Post Op - Struggling To Get In Protein

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was just sleeved on May 22nd and released from the hospital last night.

I am having a hard time getting in all the Water and Protein my Doctor wants me to get.

Does anybody have any suggestions? What did you drink/eat the first two weeks out of surgery?

Thanks!

Hi Jamie! The 1st 2 weeks I barely drank anything. I didnt come close to getting in all the Protein and Clear Liquids. I'm almost 5 weeks out and I still struggle. Its easier now that I can eat soft chicken, apparently that has a lot of protein in 3 oz, but its still a struggle just to eat that. Ive been making a regular 6 oz piece and nibbling on it for meals and Snacks, and then maybe a cheese stick. I think they just want you to try your best to meet their goals. From what Ive experienced and heard from others on here, every week gets a little easier to meet your nutrition goals :)

I was told to definitely get the 64 oz of fluids so I wouldn't become dehydrated. With dehydration comes a trip to the hospital for an IV.

I was sleeved on 04/26/12, so I'm just 4 weeks out. I too struggle to get all the fluids in; best advice there is - start your day early and immediately start it with some sort of Fluid (Water, tea, Decaf coffee, Protein shake).

For Protein - I've had no problems whatsoever. In fact, now that my daily goal is 85-100 grams, I find sometimes I have to watch not going too high. Crazy, huh?

My routine in the first week:

49 grams: Two times a day: 4 fl oz fat-free milk + 1 scoop 20 gm Protein powder (I use GNC AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 in chocolate --> tasty and blends very easily)

30 grams: Two times a day: 1 packet 15gm Protein Powder Soup + 8 fl oz hot Water

79 grams Total

Here's my routine now (soft phase):

49 grams: Two times a day: 4 fl oz fat-free milk + 1 scoop 20 gm protein powder

15 grams: 1/2 cup fat-free cottage cheese (I add 1 packet Stevia and a couple dashes of cinnamon)

30 grams: 2 packets protein powder Soup + 16 fl oz hot water

94 grams total for the day

I mix things up by trading for some of the following options:

14-16 grams: 1/3 cup egg white + 1 oz reduced fat cheese

6 grams: reduced fat string cheese

2 grams: reduced fat babybel-type cheese

As you can tell, I'm VERY dairy-heavy... but it's easy to come by during the "soft" phase.

Good luck!!

try taking small sips almost constantly, you are not going to be able to "drink" like you did before.its going to be small sips.i was able to put crytal light in my Water, or try Vitamin water.but you must drink, you dont want to end up in the hospital for dehydration, its no fun.

Thank you ! Do you have any ideas or help with how she should do this? I know they said 80 grams Protein a day but i think she is struggling right now trying to get in 40 oz. is this normal for the first and second week and should I be concerned? Did you guys eat like applesauce or anything like that? Sorry , I am just a worried MOM and want her to succeed?

Ur such a great mom! She's not going to get in all 80 right now. She should get some from Protein Drink, milk, yogurt, soup... All the stuff she's allowed to have. Count everything. Should be at least 50ish right now.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
