I am 2 weeks post op and every time I eat (swallow) I get an extremely sharp pain on the left side of my chest that lasts about a half hour. Has anyone else experienced this? I mentioned it to my surgeon and he said he has never gotten this complaint from other patients and maybe its trapped air under my diaphragm. Its driving me crazy and making me scared to eat anything. I also read on the internet that it could be a muscle spasm which is nothing to worry about but there is nothing that can be done about it. All I know is that it started with my surgery. I just read on the internet that it could be esophogeal spasm. I wonder if I should go back to my surgeon or my primary care physician.

I had the same thing it would hurt sooooo much at that same spot. But I can tell you it should be gas, so I started to walk longer distances and it helped a lot if you can take gas x could help you a lil but yeah it's very common. Good luck it will go away for sure

I am still drinking the Protein Shakes which give me an enormous amount of gas. I am not sure if I am allowed to take gas x but will check and start walking further as you advised. Thanks so much....The pain is unbearable.

I know that pain is really uncomfortable but it goes away with walking the more you walk the easy it gets. Trust me some days I just kept calling the doctor. I couldn't deal with Protein Shakes so I bought GNC lean Protein Shake it is tasty and little by little goes down easily for sure

Rosemarie,

Girlfriend I am in the same boat. The pain is excruciating and i have to move around alot right after I drink anything or it gets worse. I also heard from my doctor that it is gas. As much as you may not feel like it.....WALK! I also noticed that the pain subsided when I took a deep breath right after I swallowed something. Almost opening up the esophogus for the air bubble to come out.

GAS X dissoluble strips are taken at least five times a day, sometimes more.....it totally helps!!

I'm five days post op

I'm 2 days post op and every time I swallow I get what feels like an air bubble and then I have to burp. It's weird and somewhat painful, but if I take smaller sips it helps. Sorry you're having this pain:(

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
