My surgery date is June 4th and I am excited to begin my journey but completely petrified about being put to sleep. This will be my very first surgery ever so I want to hear how it was for y'all. Were you in excruciating pain when you woke up? Do you dream? Do you have a headache? Do they let you take something to calm you before they start the anesthesia thing? EEEeek!!!!

I havent had my sleeve yet, but when I had my band my anesthesia experience wasnt that bad. They started my IV several hours before my surgery. when it was time to go to the OR, they took me in and the anesthesiologist told me he was going to give me someething to relax. Thats the last thing I remember until I woke up. I was very uncomfortable and I just wanted to sit up but they wouldnt let me. I had to wait until I went back to my room. They gave me something for pain and I felt more relaxed. Went back to sleep and before I knew it I was back in my room. Overall not bad at all. Anesthesia can be scary, but my advice is try to relax. The goal of the Dr, is to make the experience as easy as possible for you. They can give you something to help you relax before surgery, just ask. Good luck!!

When they put the needle into your IV and say "Just giving you a little something to help you relax", the best words of my life lol. I think everything will be just fine. You have 10 people there monitoring you from every aspect. You will be taken care of.

Thank you Corinna! I think I have watched too much Grey's Anatomy and I am that person who googles side effects and complications of everything SO i am doing it to myself!!

When I had surgery for my deviated septum, they knocked me out. It was funny because they told me to count back from 10 and I actually made it to 0. That's what they say anyways.

It shouldn't be a huge deal, don't fret!

I Shared your fear. I'd never been "under" that long. It was the best sleep of my life. I slept for 2 days afterwards between trying to let the anesthesia come off and my own personal Morphine pump (which I hated to use b/c it makes me sleep), but it was well worth. Good luck

Hey Angelakay2, I was sleeved April 23rd, I am 42 and it was the first surgery I ever had as well. I'll tell you honey, I was scared to death. The staff came in to talk to me beforehand and they were all so professional and nice to me and then when the anesthesiologist came to talk to me, his experience and kindness came thru and I felt a bit more relieved and when he said "I'm gonna let you get some sleep honey" I remember waking up and seeing my husband smiling down on me and was astonished that I didn't remember anything. No dreams, no headache, just sore like I just had surgery..lol.

I figured that when I woke up that I would be in severe pain and not able to move but that wasn't the case. I was just sore and sleepy. I was nauseous and did vomit that first day but you told hold a pillow kinda firm to your stomach and that gives you some support while you vomit...I remember my surgeon telling me that the first day I may vomit blood and to know that's perfectly normal....that's due to the fact that you have blood in your stomach from the surgery and you're on blood thinners. He was right and I was glad he told me that ahead of time or else I would have freaked out.

You will be fine and then after it's all said and done you will find someone's post on here and give them the same support from your experience.

I didn't even know I was being put under really. I remember being rolled from the pre-op room into the operating room & they had me move from the stretcher to the operating table. I remember seeing the big OR lights above me. Next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room and someone was asking me how my pain was. It was about a 8, and they gave me short-acting pain medicine every 5 minutes until it decreased and I was more awake to be sent to my room. It is the oddest feeling in the world since it seems like it's only been a minute from operating room to recovery room even though it's actually been hours.

I know some people experience nausea and/or vomiting due to anesthesia, but I never had either.

Mygastricsleevelife-I think the trip to the OR itself would freak me out! lol. I will report back so future sleevees will know how a totally chickened out girl did!

I have had nausea due to morphine in the past and a few times after twilight (which is a different type of anesthesia) after getting a lumbar puncture and cervical injections, but never with regular anesthesia. The nurse asked me if I have ever gotten motion sickness and I have. If you have issues with motion sickness in the back seat of a car, just call your doctor's office and ask if they will or could they use the Transderm scop (Scopolamine) patch.

Many surgeons use the Transderm scop (Scopolamine) Patch for regular anesthesia and when I have had it, I experienced no nausea due to surgery and complications. The head nurse in my medical group told me, in this advanced age there really should be no excuse for a patient to experience nausea due to anesthesia and it's her pet-peeve, She stated there are a plethora of anti-nausea medications that they can give you afterwards too.

I'm glad to hear someone else admit to this!!! I regularly have spinal steriod injections in which they put me under with the Propofal (spelling?). It's the Michael Jackson night night drug! Was a little scared at first but now I love that stuff! Best sleep ever. You wake up feeling almost "refreshed". I sound like a weirdo....I know, but I've never had any trouble with it (knock on wood)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post op 4 days. I remember them telling me they were about to wheel me in to surgery. Then I remember waking up as I was being wheeled in to my room I would be staying in. And being so sleepy I couldn't keep my eyes open. So I didn't!! LOL...u will be fine!!

Mine was super easy. I was laying on the operating room table, told to put my arms out to my side, then he said I would go to sleep soon. Next thing I knew I was waking up in my hospital room! No dreams, no headache, no pain. Just a tiny bit of nausea that first 24hrs.

But it was sooooo easy!
