Recovery House Vs. Hotel

Recommended Posts

I am wondering which will be the best after surgery. On one hand you have the recovery house which will tend to every need you have, feed you IF you can drink anything, give you plenty of meds to ease your pain, however, I really worry about the comfort of the guest I will be taking. They also say the recovery house can be crowded and loud at times too. The hotel is the other option....ahhhh....peace and serinity for recovery but no nurses by your side and I think you may have to load up and travel back and forth to the recovery house twice daily for meds. Can anyone offer advise on this?

I had surgery on the 9th. I had requested the hotel with my friend. I had a revision, they sent her to the hotel and me to the recovery house. It was OK but my friend did not see me for 2 days and she was beginning to wonder. I swapped to the hotel after one night in the recovery house. My surgery was a 11 PM Mexican time, they took her to the hotel at 9:00 a couple of hours before I had surgery. that was fine but they sent all my clothes, toothbrush, comfy clothes, all of it with my friend. I had no idea what room my friend was in so...we were glad to see each other. I am glad I got to stay at the recovery house for a little while. I loved the hotel and I was comfortable by then. Communication is not great so you just have to be flexible and have a since of humor. You can easily walk to shopping from the hotel. Stay on the main roads, don't so side streets and know they drive very crazy!!!

I don't know quite how it hapened. We had two separate suitcases. I did n't know till the next morning that I was going to recovery house. But If you told your guest to make sure your suitcase went where you go, that would probably work.

Good luck. I am 9 days out and even my stiches look good!

Unless I feel really bad afterwards, I am staying at the hotel with my mom. I think it will be more relaxing and I am bringing my own anti nausea and pain meds that my pcp prescribed for me. Have lots of movies to watch (bringing a portable dvd player) and some good books on my Kindle. Plan on doing as much walking as possible. Good luck to you and whatever decision you make!

Just got back from my surgery 2 days ago and I HAD to stay at the recovery house for 2 days because I had a NG tube placed during the surgery. It wasnt to bad. I was one of the lucky ones that had a room that I only had to share with one other person. The hotel was nice but we ended up on the loud side and I could hardly sleep for the night I was there. I opted to come home a day early just so I could rest properly. However, the hotel was very nice and you could have all the popsicles and broth you wanted. The staff was very nice and accomodating. Request the quiet side!! Best of luck.

Corrina,

Question, what is an NG tube?

Thanks for the info about the noisy side of the hotel! I'll be sure to use your tip!!!

So, how are you feeling? Sick?

I had a little meltdown of my own this morning. 3 days till surgery and I am beginning to slightly freak out! Putting final touches on my Will, just in case, and taking care of the last minute errands. Have been on a protien shake diet for the past 1+ week. I can tell it's affecting me for sure! Today beginns my liquid only diet and I think reality is beginning to sink in!

Hey boots!

How did it go? What did you think of the recovery house or hotel? How is your recovery going? I hope you are doing well. Let us know!

Corinna

P.s the ng tube was a tube that goes through your nose down to your stomach. You only have to have that if you are having a revision.

Just thought I'd add an update for those who haven't had surgery yet. I did not get to choose where I stayed (Recovery House or Hotel). Neither did anyone else in my group. All of the band to sleeve patients had to stay at the recovery house because we had the NG tube down our noses. The beds are the recovery house are VERY hard. Mostly bunk beds. But it was nice to be able to walk downstairs and watch tv comfortably. Unfortunately, they sent my Mom (guest) to the hotel for the first 2 nights and they never let her know how we were doing. Terrible communication, but very nice people.

Hi there,

I am scheduled for July 20th and looking for any helpful tips that the veteran sleevers of Almanza might offer. Thanks in advance for the info :) I hope all is going well for each of you and that you are enjoying being on the loser's bench.

Thank you,

Deanna

The recovery house was full when I was there so we ended up at the hotel wothout a choice. Hotel was great! Very relaxing and the front desk keeps an endless supply of the frozen icies! I am planning to go back as soon as I get my surgery loan paid off and have a little nip here and a tuck or two there! Mexico baby....its the only way to go!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
