Surgery Date Scheduled - June 13Th :)

Recommended Posts

I had my first appointment with the Dr. on the 9th and now I am scheduled for surgery. The countdown begins... I start a 2 week pre-op diet in just 2 week which is mostly protien shakes and liquid but the Dr said I could include lean chicken and cottage cheese up until the last 2 days of the diet. I stopped drinking soda over a week ago now which was a huge addiction to me. Can't wait until I can start posting that I'm dropping the pounds and seeing some big changes. Anyone else having surgery on the 13th?

First, good luck with your surgery!! I'll be having my surgery in about 6-7 months in St. Louis as well. Please keep everyone posted on how everything goes!! Hopefully, by the time I have my surgery, you'll be a pro and can provide all sorts of information :)

Gene, I also stopped drinking dt cokes price to surgery--I loved me some dt cokes!!! But post surgery I cn still get some caffeine by drinking tea. My next door neighbor had the sleeve and occasionally drinks carbonated beverages, but I don't recommend it to anyone! Giving up dt cokes was one of the things I told myself I would never do again after surgery because I had an addiction.

Thanks Artsy!!! I totally agree with you, I plan to never drink another soda and the primary reason is that it's an been an addiction for me all of my life. I stopped drinking it for a couple of months years ago and I let myself just have one or two after that and I went right back to drinking it all the time. I can't just have one. I love iced tea so that will be my new drink of choice. Crystal light is also good. It's a decision that I am making for life... hopefully a long one ;)

I give you both a lot of credit!!! Right now as I type this, I have a 24 oz caffeine free Diet Coke on my desk. I know I will have to stop all the diet soda soon, butjust not quite ready yet. I'll have to find a good substitute like tea myself. I know it won't be easy!! :)

You'll know when you are ready. I had already mentally preparing and telling myself that I wanted to stop prior to surgery. I knew that surgery will have it's own set of mental challanges without adding the soda addiction to it. A week ago last Saturday night I was sitting at home and had just opened a Sprite (after already drinking several Cokes for the day) and I just made the decison right then that this was going to be my last soda. I didn't wake up thinking this is my last day it was just a split second decision and I have stuck too it. The first couple of days are the hardest.

Thanks Dalton!!! You'll do great on the pre-op diet :) You'll stick to it because you have to. I know I won't be happy doing it but I'll stick to it because I have no choice if I want surgery... and I WANT surgery!!! is your Dr allowing chicken in your pre-op diet?

He is only letting me have liquid: atkin's shakes, broths and Jello. What all are you allowed to eat/drink? They also told me no wine, that just made me cry, lol. Thanks for responding!!

Pre-Op Diet for me...

One Protein shake for Breakfast

One Protein Shake for lunch

One Protein Shake for dinner

I can also have Lean chicken breasts and cottage cheese at any meal.

Consume a MINIMUM of 64 ounces of clear fluids between Protein Shakes (OMG)

approved liquids

Water or flavored water

crystal light

propel

G2

sugar free KoolAid

sugar free Popsicle

Sugar Free Jello

chicken or Beef broth

Ocean Spray Sugar Free Drink Mixes

As far as soda Diet or otherwise it's recommended that you do not have carbonated beverages post surgery so my thought is it's best just to stop drinking them as soon as possible (which is why I stopped). I hate most diet soda's anyway so it didn't even appeal to me to swap to diet.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
