Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hi all- it's been a while since I have posted. I have been struggling this past week. I am struggling in the heat to eat enough and am finding that when I do eat it's going right through me (sorry if that was TMI).

My question is has anyone else struggled with this and what can I do as my energy levels are really low and I am dizzy quite a lot - plus the stomach pains after I eat until it goes through me are pretty awful. I can't have shakes etc as they go through me too.

I am only eating steamed green veggies and grilled chicken or fish- keeping it simple but it still doesn't stay down. Yesterday I managed to eat less than 200 cal and today's about the same. This is not at all my intent but I just can't keep much besides Water down easily. I am getting over gastro from last week too so maybe it's related.

I have not consulted a dietician but am planning on doing so soon but anything I can try in the interim would be great :)

Thanks!!! Cheers Liss

Hi Liss.Sorry you are having such a ghastly time :( I have had this after gastro before I had the sleeve.Sometimes a gastro can strip your bowel of its normal bacteria and leave your gut inflamed and unable to absorb properly.Lactose can be a short term issue for some.Probiotics like inner health plus tabs or low fat yoghurt can be a big help.Pureed apple, broth (too hot in the weather for you tho?) and white rice are good. Keep up your fluids especially electrolytes as you will be dehydrating.

"Gastrostop" from the chemist is great to halt the diarrhoea for a day or so - I find it really good to stop the cramps after eating as well - but you will need to see your GP if you need to keep taking it.

I hope this helps Liss and that you feel much better soon.

I have been taking gastro stop two twice a day for a month! Eat some Soup, Lissa. Maybe egg drop or got and sour or a bowl of Vietnamese pho. If you can tolerate dairy have Greek yogurt. Try a probiotic. Inner Health is apparently the best one. It's behind the counter at the chemist. Good luck!

So we are done ! We stayed an extra night in hospital as I was suffering from a bit of nausea but all seems okay now. Just need to concentrate on fluids for the next week until we go back to see the Dr. Dr Phil Lockie and his wife Shirley Lockie (ass & co-ordination) are an amazing team

Congratulations. I've been wondering how you were getting on. Enjoy your break and at least it's warm weather that makes you want to drink.

I'm glad all went well. I'm 2 weeks post-op and have lost 10 kg since my op date. Currently I'm still on puréed food. It's weird not getting hungry!

Hi I'm just over 2 weeks post op, and also on purée, struggling a bit to find things that I want to eat, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks everyone both a little nervous around meal times at the moment. All a learning experience as we are both different. Things that sit well with me may not sit well with him in the interim. Amazed at the lack of appetite I have read about it so much but experiencing it is another thing altogether.

Congrats Ausmith and all the others newly sleeved - one day at a time folks, it really does get better day by day.

Sydney siders, I haven't read this post for a couple of weeks (exams!) and can see you are now planning on meeting in Parramatta on 10/11 (I think that's right). I couldn't make the city date but Parra I can do - pending resolution of one possible Sunday lunch my hubby has been trying to hastily organise, but I don't think will come off.

I'd love to meet up.

That is great Susan - Lissa and I have planned to meet for brunch on Sunday 10/11 - I have been checking out a few places so any suggestions of a cafe/restaurant would be welcome. I will send you a personal message with my mobile number.

It's in Wentworth St in Parramatta and urban spoon lists it as the number 1 place to go for brekky :)

I just checked on urban spoon and it says they are not open on the weekends - I find that hard to believe so will give them a call!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
