After How Long Can I Start Weight Training

Hey everyone, so i'm hitting week 4 this friday and i really feel that i need to start weight training to accelerate my weightloss. How long was it before you could start weight training?

I started my weightloss journey at 101 kilos and am now at 92 kilos and am having a bit of a stall. Any advice out there from anyone to rev up weightloss?

This is ALWAYS a question for your surgeon. The majority of people including myself was only allowed to walk for the first 6 weeks. We were then allowed more exercise and weight lifting. Once you are cleared by your surgeon, I recommend taking it very slow and easing into your workouts. Do not over due it, it can cause more harm than good.

I started light weight lifting after 6 weeks, I incorporated riding my bike, treadmill and the ellipticle. I am 11 months out and I still lift weights 4 times a week and do cardio everyday.

If you are 4 weeks out, it will simply be math for you, you will have such a calorie deficit, you will lose the weight rather quickly the first 2 months.

I also started with light weights after 6 weeks. I lifted before surgery, though, so my light weights might be considered heavy for someone who's never lifted. I think I started at 50-60% of what I'd lift before surgery. I avoided any weighted ab exercises - I like to do crunches on a decline bench with a weight plate on my chest, and I stayed away from those til 3 months.

After about 10 weeks, I was doing bootcamps, so it was a free-for-all.

Everyone is exactly correct...check with your doctor first. My doc didn't clear me until 12 weeks out. Until then all I could do was walking. Good luck!

My doctor advised to wait until I hit my three month mark. However, I had some difficult also. Good luck,,,,

I still don't do heavy weights, but I was cleared for light weights and more intense cardio at 6 weeks by my surgeon. I do high reps and low weights for my arms, abdominal exercises for my core, and lots of time on the exercise bike for my cardio. Be very careful that you are doing core work with proper form so that you don't injure your back and wait until your doctor approves you before stepping things up. The last thing you want in the early stages is an injury!

My doctor is all the way in india and i live in kenya so all my follow up is basically done via email and even then they are not so great with responding to my mails so i rely a lot on the forum. I think i'm going to wait till the 2 month mark before i start weight training. Thanks a lot for all the help guys i really appreciate it.

I've been lifting weights since the day I got home from the hospital (Day 2). I got permission first of course! I'm still on a 10 pound restriction so I've been doing 8 pound bicep curls, one arm at a time, 10 pound with both arms triceps behind the head, 5 pound in each hand shoulder presses, 5 pound in each hand side arm raises, and 5 pound in each hand chest presses. It's not much and I'd love to be doing more, but I really feel like it's been helping. My biceps look awesome already!

I would suggest to allow your self time to heal. When in doubt, don't do it. My surgery was 1/23/12 and I waited a month and tried just a 10 lb weight and I felt a burning sensation at the incision where the scope is. I did not pick up a weight again until just the beginning of this month and they are 3 lb weights. I do a high intensity short circuit training where it's mostly focused on my core but I do boxing with the weights and I have found this to be suitable enough for me. I don't want to be ripped, just lean & tone. I waited until a little over 2 months to start. The worst thing would be to rupture or tear something because you're pushing yourself too fast.

Thanks tai29 i'm going to heed tour advice. Stick to walking and in another month start light weight excercises.

Sometimes less is more but I definitely know how exciting it is to be down and feeling motivated enough to exercise. Perhaps increase the length or incline of your walks to give you that extra challenge you need.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
