Don Get It Confused, Im A Drinker! Not An Alcoholic!

Not that I have your attention lol...What's good?

How many post-op sleevers still drink hard liquor? Soft liquor?

I do understand it's counter-productive to losing weight, but that's my only vice or should I say my poison of choice.

how many drinks are we talking??

I drink wine now... I used to be a bacardi and diet or a margarita drinker, now the margaritas are too sweet and the bacardi n diet just doesn't taste the same. Now gimme a nice Reisling or a Malbec depending on my mood and in a happy camper!

I'll be curious to see what others say about this. But, I will say that my family has come by - bearing wine, cognac, etc.. and even though I know at just 4 weeks out that i can't indulge, I really haven't had a desire to. which is interesting, because I often had a nightly "night cap". I mean, to be honest, my last "drink, was about 2 weeks before the surgery and I kept thinking, well.. no worries, you can indulge soon after the surgery... blah, blah, blah... you know, trying to convince myself that my life wasn't going to change that much - HA - yeah, riiiiiight....

Still no real desire... I'm actuallty shocked... maybe it will come back... or maybe not

I am interested to see what others have to say too. Drinking wine is my vice now and I have to say that I do drink more than I should. I am going to stop two weeks before surgery to make sure I do not double shock my body. If it comes down to it and after I am sleeved I feel the need to keep drinking I will seek help. There is no way in hell I am going to ruin a $10,000 surgery (out of my own pocket) on calories from alcohol.

Jimmy - it is great that you are thinking about this now beforehand. I would look in to maybe having one low calorie drink once in a while. I have heard that bacardi and diet is low carb and has the least amount of calories. Good luck to you.

I have a glass of wine or two sometimes.

I have had vodka with Ocean Spray "diet" juice (5 calories/8 oz). It can get you, so be careful!

I am six weeks out, and I used to have a glass of wine daily, mixed drinks sometimes on weekends. I stopped drinking when I started my pre-op diet, and last weekend I had my first drink(s) since surgery. I really don't have as much of a desire to drink as I did before, and I can nurse one drink for most of the evening, as opposed to having several drinks in a sitting pre-surgery.

I'm talking bout every weekend, I drink every weekend lol... I'm a rum and redbull drinker first, then a vodka w/ cranberry or OJ second

Isn't Redbull carbonated? I haven't had a carbonated drink since before surgery. Come to think of it, I have never had a Redbull!

The vodka cranberry is pretty much what I do, with the Ocean Spray low calorie juice. I tried vodka with grapefruit using the 50 calorie/8 oz juice, but it tasted too good. Too many calories and the alcohol can sneak up on you!

I learned many years ago to never judge other people, I had many vices myself. I used to drink but I found that was one vice that I replaced with going to the gym. After my surgery, I cannot even think of drinking or eating things that are not good for me. I work too hard at the gym to have things that are going to slow my progress of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I still go out with my friends, they have drinks, I have water. I do not miss alcohol at all and I used to love my beer and margs. As you lose the weight and move toward your goal, it is very hard to do things that will slow your progress, you too might find you do not have the urge to drink anymore. Good luck to you on your journey.

I drink about 3-4 drinks a week total :-) 1-2 beers at my bowling leauge, and 1-2 on a Friday night with my boyfriend.

I used to be a beer drinker before the lapband. They told us not to drink for the first year. So I didnt. I basically quit drinking for several years. I tried to drink some beer for New Years this year before I got the sleeve. It tasted nasty. I couldnt do it. I drank coke zero instead. I may try vodka & cranberry juice if a very special occasion comes up but, I'm better off without it and much healthier.

I don't drink often but I have had wine, jack and coke, and even vodka and red bull. I didnt add alcohol back until five months post op and then only sparingly. You have to remember the trade off. Yes, you can enjoy the drinks but they're liquid calories which will kill any diet- sleeve or no sleeve.

I started about 3 months post op and drink about 5 drinks a week....margaritas, malibu and gatorade, sangria, you name it. I use to drink jack and coke or redbull with vodka but now I can't drink anything carbonated because it makes my stomach feel really upset. This weekend the kids have 3 days weekend and I am flying solo and moving soon cross country. I wont be surprised if my check liver light comes on ;). The only difference now is I am a complete light weight. My tolerance from before to now is ridiculous. I can't even drive after one drink so I have to make sure I aint going anywhere if I drink.

Check liver light! Now that was funny!

Regarding the posts about the calories in alcohol - yes, those are liquid calories, but in my case, the danger of weight gain from drinking has been the overeating afterwards. All common sense would go out the window. Now, I don't (can't) do that, and I hope I never do!

There was a time when I drank sweet frozen and mixed drinks and didn't pay attention to the calories. I was pretty big, larger than I was when I started this VSG process. Well, one day I actually read the label on the frozen mixers and I actually cried at how many calories I had been drinking in mixer alone! No wonder I was so big. I have never touched those mixers since then and have had maybe half a dozen margaritas in the last ten years. Now I only drink wine, or alcohol mixed with a no/low calorie mixer.

Amanda! I know what you mean!! I was a cognac drinker, and you are soooo right! it's the eating afterwards! I was always starving!!! I would take a half a snifter of cognac, after the kids were all asleep, and then soon afterwards, I'd be so hungry, i'd practically make another dinner just for me!

I know there are empty calories in alcohol, but I always liked the fact that there were 0 carbs in cognac. But all that fell by the wayside because it would cause me to eat, and eat, and eat! Dang, I just don't miss that!
