Can You Drink Milk Post-Op?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of the Protein Shakes say to mix with milk or Water.

Can you use milk for the Protein shakes post-op or just water?

To answer your question: YES, you CAN drink milk post-op as long as you could tolerate milk PRE-OP that is. There have been a very FEW that have complained about suddenly becoming lactose intolerant POST-OP.

This also begs the question; Will you want to or need to? The answer is NO. You should try and avoid the calories and fat ( as Mouse Trap warns above) to enhance your caloric drop and speed your weight loss.

That being said, just TRY one of the shakes with Water, they are nasty with milk and IMHO just plain intolerable with Water. But you be the judge.

What Rootman said... LOL I mix mine with Skim, at 6 days out, having no issues.

You can, I do skim milk with my Protein Shakes but you need to wait till your cleared for full liquids. For me, that was day 8, but it upset my stomach the first day. Sometimes our stomachs need a little more time to heal than what's been written down for us.

I just tried milk with some Unjury. I only had a couple of bites but my tummy was not happy about it. Within minutes I was feeling hot and my tummy was churning. I don't know if its lactose related or not. Never had any milk issues before surgery...idk...

It was about 9 or 10 days after surgery that I could drink milk. Maybe you should wait a few days?

Waving hi Sharon! I can't because I was a little lactose intolerant before and now well yeah I don't go there. I would stick to Water just because of the calories unless you just can't stand it and then you do what you have to do to get your Protein in. I prefer the RTD ones just less hassle.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
