Emotional Over Eating.

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am 5 1/2 weeks post op. tonight at work ( I am a nurse) I had a very difficult patient who pulled out everything and anything and peed on me. Basically a really bad night. I didn't get to eat for almost 12 hrs let alone sit down. During the end of my shift I went into the kitchen area and there was big plate of chocolate chip Cookies someone baked and brought in. I automatically grabbed one and stuffed it in face. Half way through my cookie I stopped myself and threw it away. I feel ashamed I let my emotions/ stress get to me where I shoved a cookie in my mouth like that. Sad part is that I didn't get the awful sick feeling people talk about when they eat high sugared food ( wish I did so I would NOT be tempted to be bad) I guess I am stressed, tired and wanting to vent. Hope I didn't ruin everything

Sorry to hear you have had a bad evening. Unfortunely, I do vomit when I eat high sugar foods. The sleeve has taught many things such as my limit and the foods I should not eat. Hopefully, you willnt have another night like this. We are all human and make mistakes, maybe next time carrying a snack in your pocket or sneaking off for 5 mins to eat would be possible... just suggestions. At work it is hard for me to eat in my 15 min break and I usually vomit due to eating fast. It is an adjustment for all of us. Good Luck

One of the things a lot of us sleevers have in common is a lifetime of putting ourselves last, of training ourselves to be our most skilled abusers. The sleeve forces us to put ourselves first. I have friends that are RN's, I know how rigorous and straining it can be, but you "couldn't" take care of yourself at any time in those 12 hours? Couldn't, or wouldn't? This isn't a criticism of you (no flames plz everyone!) but rather gently trying to point out that you are WORTH it, that you come first - no ifs ands or buts! That in all liklihood, the world wasn't going to go down in flames if you took 15 minutes alone in a supply closet to breathe, sip a Protein Shake, and focus. You HAVE to put yourself first, physically, emotionally, in every way. It is too cruel, and dangerous, not to.

I don't think you should flog yourself for half a cookie. I believe that one of the benefits of surgery is that although one may have a hard day and reach for the cookie, the sleeve does not allow one to totally overeat. Sounds like given the circumstances things went really well.

Other days, unlike today, I am able to sneak in a snack or two. But last night was a different story :-( so time consuming and demanding. I actually had 4 nurses with my patient in 2 separate occasions, it was wild. Also my hospital doesn't allow bottled Water at the desk, so I always have to walk to kitchen. I can usually get in 2 Water bottles, but not last night. Hope a night like this doesn't repeat.

Girl I am so sorry you had a bad night. It always sucks when we have bad days! I too have found myself having rough and stressful days and grabbing a bag of chips or Cookies or something else I shouldn't have. I have actually started not buying certain things because I can't help myself at stressful times. MY life is ALWAYS stressful LoL. An almost 3 year old, a fiance out of work and physically ill, and then myself who is a stay at home mom feeling bad about not working. It seems like I always have a reason to grab something bad for me. Like someone else said that's what is great about the sleeve, I can make my mistakes sometimes without it really being a huge problem to my weight loss. I have ordered pizza on crazy nights and only been able to eat one tiny piece. My problem is wanting to eat more to calm my nerves even though my stomach is full. I get so mad that I can't eat like I used to, to self medicate with food. SUCKS! But it is also such a blessing, I have always said that my food issues were my biggest problem so now I am forced to deal with them.

Are you not allowed to even have a drink in like a Water bottle (sport bottle)? I would think they would let you at least do something. Nurses have such hard jobs. You guys are always on your feet, you have to deal with ridiculous people sometimes, and like you have stated you don't really get much downtime. I really hope you don't have another night like last nights in a long time! Good luck! Also, don't feel guilty about half a cookie. The thing is you recognized what you were doing and I am sure before your sleeve you would have had way more than half a cookie. Be proud that you stopped yourself and that you recognized your feelings and why you grabbed that cookie. In reality I think you accomplished more good last night than bad. So brush it off, and maybe next time you won't even look at those Cookies twice!

Don't nurses have unions? That sounds like some BS, not being able to have Water at the station - that's an issue of hydration!

Iliana-

Considering the night you had, I think you need to reframe this. Last night was a victory. The focus shouldn't be the fact that you ate half a cookie. Rather, let's focus on the fact that you realized what was happening and threw half of that cookie away.

Our stomaches were operated on, not our heads. Of course emotional eating will still be a battle. You are doing great and overcame a major hurdle. You had a helluva a night that resulted in half of a cookie. For frame of reference, think about how much you would have eaten after a similar shift prior to surgery. :)

Hugs!

Amanda

Nope, no unions for nurses, at least not in most states. No Water or anything at the nurses station where I work either. If you think about it, even the nurses stations are pretty germy. Even if you are anal about handwashing, your co-workers might not be.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
