Question For Veterans :)

For those of you who are all healed, losing, but winning ;) how much can you comfortably eat at a time? For a typical Breakfast, lunch and dinner?

BS as I read through all of my nutritionists info, it was hard to comprehend when it stated "only one to three bites". LOL! I mean, yes, I understood, but I thought to myself "really? 3?". Now, a few weeks post-op I KNOW what TWO bites are!!!! Hahahaha! Wake up call! (For those who have not yet had surgery, "two bites, means 2 nibbles off of a baby sized spoon!"

I know it gets easier and better in time, and I know our tummies are 3-5 ounces once healed and unswollen... but I am curious to know what the "Bariatric Regular" diet looks like in terms of volume?

I am 7 weeks out and can pretty much eat whatever I want just in smaller quantities. I try and keep my caloric intake below 900 per day. This is my happy number. My body was in starvation mode at less than that and I wasn't losing. There are several of us at various stages on My Fitness Pal and our food diaries are public so you can see exactly what we are eating. It helps to gets some ideas for your own meals. Hey there! I'm almost 11 months out. I still have really tight restriction, but it's a lot better than when I was first sleeved (I have a 32-french sleeve). Today for breakfast I had 1/2 a scrambled egg and 1/4 c. grits with 2 TBS cheese. I can eat 5 saltines with Peanut Butter or cheese. For lunch, I ate about a cup of green salad and steamed vegetables--I have to remember to chew these things well, but if I do, I can eat more volume of these "watery" types of food. I can eat 4 shrimp if I don't eat anything else with it--kind of the medium-large boiled shrimp. I can eat a 6-ounce container of yogurt--this is a big deal, since it took me a LONG time to be able to finish a yogurt!

Volume really depends on the type of food. I can only tolerate very small amounts of concentrated Protein, but I can tolerate salad pretty well now--just salad veggies and 1 TBS cheese with vinaigrette-type dressing.

My husband eats quite a bit more in volume than I do, and always has. He was sleeved a year ahead of me. At this point, he eats what I consider "normal" meals--like those a person might eat who has never had a weight issue. I eat small meals, 5 to 6 a day, and that works for me.

I am 7 months out. A normal day for me looks like this:

B ~ 1/4 cup egg beaters, sliced mushroom, Tomato, 1/2 oz shredded cheddar cheese (scrambled together)

L ~ 2-3 oz lunchmeat or chicken (or other protein), sliced veggies like cucumber or tomato, 1 oz reduced-fat cheese or a wedge of laughing cow light swiss (sometimes with a few multi-seed crackers)

D ~ 2-3 oz Protein of some sort (chicken, meatballs, beef, etc.); small salad with balsamic viniagrette; small serving of carbs (1/3 of a baked potato with light sour cream, small serving of Pasta, etc.)

Snacks ~ sometimes a small portion of buffalo chicken dip with 3-4 tortilla chips; veggies; cheese/crackers

Today I had a hangover :) and went to Denny's with the husband - I had a slice of ham, an egg over medium, and about half of 1 pancake. YUM. I was stuffed but it was SO good!! I generally don't "crave" carbs unless I have a hangover (and that's not very frequent) so I typically do pretty well with fairly low-carb dieting. This isn't necessarily because I feel I lose faster with less carbs, but I just find there's not room for carbs once I get my Protein and veggies in.

I feel like I eat a fairly normal diet and my portions aren't so small anymore that people look at me weird. :) Early out I would bring my tiny little servings of food in my itty bitty tupperware and the girls at work would crack up, but now nobody bats an eye.

I'm almost 19 months post op and it really just depends on sleevie...some days I can eat 2 helpings of homemade lasagna and some days I can only take a few bites.

I use to eat 1 pc. of veggie gourmet pizza from round table and now I can eat 2 pcs...once in a great while I can eat a whole pc. of Sam's club pizza (which are huge) tonight I could only eat a few bites...again it all depends on sleevie.

I'm sooo grateful for the restriction, that's what has kept me at goal.

I am 14 months post-op. This morning for breakfast I had 1/2 toasted English muffin, 1 egg, and 1/4 slice ham. For lunch I had 4 large shrimp with Thai chili sauce. For dinner I had 2 oz. tri-tip steak and 1/4 cup cauliflower w/cheese sauce. For a snack I had 14 almonds. I mostly eat Protein as I feel better when I do.

I am 7 months out and I cant eat as much at the other people have said. For breakfast I usually eat 4 cracker cut peices of cheese with two ritz crackers or the crackers with 1 tbsp of Peanut Butter. I cant hold more than that. I cannot eat 4 oz of yogurt.. I can eat almost all of it but if i try to force the rest it hurts my tummy.

For lunch I can eat 2 turkey meatballs or 2 oz of chicken or somthing like that. I can eat 3 or 4 shrimp if they are small, not salad type small but not large either. I cant hold the Protein plus a carb. There is just no way.

For dinner I can hold a few ounces of steak, not more than two and a bite or two of green Beans or something like that. If I concentrate on eating very slowly, like while I am doing college homework, i can eat more without getting that stuffed feeling. I ate 3 oz of chicken fajita meat the other night but it took me an hour! I usually get between 600 and 800 calories a day. I try for 70 grams of Protein and not more than 70 of carbs a day. They call it the 70/70 rule. I dont always get that. I have had to subsititute a Protein Drink in the morning to reach these goals. I mix unflavored with one cup of fresh oj. It works well for me even though its a little high in carbs. I do it on the way to work and then I eat my cheese or Peanut Butter crackers at my desk around 9. I walk at lunch so I need some carbs to burn off. I hope this helps...

I'm 6 weeks out and for breakfast and lunch today I'm eating 1/2c of egg beaters with 2 slices of fresh cheddar. It will take me around 3 hours of picking to get it all down.

For dinner I'll probably have 2 baked chicken tenderloin strips.

Snacks- 2oz cottage cheese, 4oz yogurt, etc.

I'm like sleeve for me.... It depends on the day! And i think my sleeve isnt super small- i can eat more than i expected sometimes. Typically I can eat 1 egg and a half an English muffin for breakfast. I can eat 3/4 of a 6 inch sub from subway (with half the bread taken off) for some examples.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
