Did anyone else have a Q Ball? It was so amazing, I decided I needed to make sure others know about it. Basically, it's a ball about the size of a Q ball that hangs in a pouch around your neck, or wherever you want to hang it from. It contains a numbing medication. Two teeny tiny tubes come out of the ball. During surgery, they are threaded into your abdomen to your incision sites. The medication just flows slowly and continuously through the tubes for about 5 or 6 days following the surgery. Meanwhile, the ball shrinks. Once you're home, when you see the ball has completely shrunk, you just gently pull the tubes out and throw the whole thing away. I did not have one moment of pain or discomfort from my incision sites. Not one! In fact, if I hadn't looked, I wouldn't even have known they were there. I needed pain meds in the hospital for the first two days, just because my stomach itself hurt without it. Once I got home, I didn't even need the pain medication they gave me. I would STRONGLY endorse this! In fact, I'd never want to have surgery without it again!

That is very interesting. I've never heard of such a thing (and I know the medical field.) I didn't have any post-op pain, but for someone that has not had surgery before or has a low pain tolerance, I'm sure it is awesome. I'm all about not suffering! I had my first baby without an epidural and could have done it with the other three; but hey, what's the point. You don't get brownie points for suffering and it only makes you feel tired and like crud anyway. Take anything they will give you. Life hurts bad enough without trying to be a super hero 

Thanks!! I am pre-op and was reading in my WLS guide book that I would probably have one of these. I didn't google it , until just now , because I figured I would get more infor on my pre-op surgery visit Tuesday, Now I feel more comfortable knowing somebody has had one!!

I had one too and it was a tremendous help...

For those of you who had it, where did you get your surgery done at and with who?

It's an On-Q pain pump. Worked wonders

Oh I hope my hospital uses these! I can not take any narcs at all after surgery so this would be great.

I had one (On Q ball). I didn't have much pain like some other people said they had. I didn't feel like I was hit by a train. I was sore but it was manageable. Between the On Q ball and the morphine for breakthrough pain, it wasn't bad at all. She said she also uses an anti-inflammatory (IV) that helps with the pain.

My doctor took it out right before I was released along with the drain. There wasn't much left. I only took the pain medication at home once. It was so acidic tasting and I was having trouble with reflux I couldn't bare to take it. Again, the pain wasn't bad. I had some OTC liquid tylenol.

I'm supposed to be getting that but I didn't know the name of it. Good to know how much it's going to help. I was told to be very careful. If you drop the ball and pull out the tube, you're done. They can't put it back in.

I have no personal experience with them but I did work with a similar product in the recovery room and some of our orthopaedic patients had them placed after shoulder surgery (they woke up SO NICELY from the anesthesia and were clearly very comfortable... The product I was familiar with had a medication similar to novacaine/lidocaine in it). The Ortho surgeons did end up discontinuing using these for the shoulder surgeries because it was delaying healing... but I believe that was specific to the shoulder (and probably does not apply to the abdomen).}
