Does Everyone Get A Drain?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm just curious about the drain. My surgeon never said anything about a drain, but I never asked either. I didn't even think to ask about it. So now I would like to ask if all get a drain or only select surgeons require you to have a drain. Geez, I learn new things every day on here to prepare me...so glad this is available to us! Thanks!!

I will be sleeved on 3/20 and will have a drain in until my 1 week postop visit (so not looking forward to this, but my surgeon is adamant about it). I know a lot of people have their drains removed before they leave the hospital or don't have one at all.

I had a drain while I was in the hospital overnight, the nurse removed it about 15 min before I went home. However, the fellow patient that was sleeved the same day I was did not have a drain at all. I asked the nurse why I had one and she said, "You just needed it, but the drainage all looks really good." What that meant I still don't know. LOL!

During my research phase I remember asking what a drain was on the board, but I completely forgot to ask the surgeon. Such a long time passed between my question on the board and the appointment when I finally got a date for the surgery that I completely forgot about it until I woke up with one. Mine stayed on until my first post-op week.

My surgeon said he doesn't do them anymore so I did not have one.

Its a as needed per surgery case. I had one...wasn't a big deal. Its really nothing to worry about. You don't know its there unless you look down at it

I've been told I will have one, and that I will have a catheter.

When I had my band put in (same surgeon) I was told I would have one, and that I would have a catheter, and I had neither.

So I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm not afraid it will hurt, I just think it's kinda creepy.

I won't see my surgeon until my surgery day...guess I won't know until then. Oh well, won't worry about it too much! Just knowing it is possible that I may have a drain and a catheter will mentally prepare me enough. Thanks for all the responses.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
