Eating And Drinking. At The Same Time?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know that it has been mentioned to me by my nutritionist that I should not eat and drink at the same time once i have been sleeved. I have just realized however that I accepted this as gospel and never really understood the logic behind the warning. I now wonder if it is because there will not be enough room in my sleeve for the all important Protein and the liquid? On the other hand, I had also heard that fluids push food down the digestive track at a quicker rate that normal peristalsis. This would hypothetically mean that one could eat more if they drank and ate at the same. I m hoping someone can help clear this up. Thanks so much!

Finally, I have read that some have no issue eating and drinking at the same time, regardless of the reasons listed above. What has been your experience?

All the very best,

Harmonic

If you eat & drink at the same time, you will push the food through too fast & get too full on the liquids & your body won't benefit from the Protein & Vitamins you need!

I found through unpleasant experience that when I eat and drink at the same time, I get very nauseous. So, I avoid it at all costs. I thought it would be difficult to not drink when I eat, but it's really not. You will adapt quickly. Try practicing it before you get sleeved so it won't weird you out so much once you're through your surgery.

I read somewhere on here that someone's NUT okayed it so that she could get her full amount of liquids in. However, I agree with what everyone else says, it literally makes me feel ill!

My experience has been bad when I tried to eat and drink. I sort of feels like I'm over filling myself and something comes up my throat. There is a Utube video that shows the effect of fluids pusing food out of the stomach.. Which means the Protein doesn't have a chance to stay in your stomach, when its pushed out you'll feel hungry sooner, which in turn makes you eat more. I admit besides giving up the trigger foods that make me overeat, not drinking with meals is hard. I watch the clock to see when I can driking again. My NUT said 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after. I think its one of those rules you should stick to for at least a year. I've heard from an old time sleever that is maintaing weight, she now eats and drinks at the same time, but she has stopped losing and is fine with that

What if you eat something your not suppose to, like say chocolate, can you drink right after so your body doesn't absorb the fat/calories? I obviously don't plan on doing this....I was just curious.

I was told by the nutritionist not to eat and drink at the same time. After surgery I asked the Doctor about this. He told me the reason was I would not be able to eat enough. The Fluid would fill my stomach and not leave enough room for Protein. Now that I am 7 months out he said I could SIP a little with my meals. I need to get the fluids in when I can.

I've found that I get sick (literally) if I try to eat and drink at the same time. As for washing the bad food through, as Meredit mentioned, that doesn't keep you from absorbing the fat and calories...it just leaves you hungry again faster. :/

I don't seem to have any trouble eating and drinking at that same time. I am only 5 weeks post-op but have never had any issues with restriction either...

In short, your stomach is muscle and the pyloric valve connects the stomach to the small intestine. When you eat and drink at the same time you stimulate the pyloric sphincter to open which in turn empties your stomach so that you can eat more. So basically when you drink and eat you turn the switch on to let more food pass and you dont get the true sensation of being "full", you don't want this because you can start eating more and you can get the cues from your body mixed up.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
