Dr F Garcia And Hospital Mi In Tijuana

Recommended Posts

On dec 11, 2011 I had my lapband removed and the gastric sleeve performed by Dr F Garcia at Hospital MI in Tijuana. I had researched Dr Garcia, had spoken to his coordinator, Linda and had also spoken to a patient that had previously had surgery with Dr Garcia. After doing a lot of research I decided that Dr Garcia and Mexico was the best option for me.

Dr Garcia and his entire surgical team were very knowledgable and I felt at complete ease once I arrived at the hospital. The nursing staff were also great. Hospital Mi is a small newer facility that has about 10 rooms and an intensive care unit that comes complete with everything that one would need to have in an intensive care unit. I have worked in the medical field for over 33 years and in many different capacities. The hospital was very clean which impressed me compared to some of the hospitals that I have been inside in the US. The equipment was state of the art and the surgical suite was very modern with all of the equipment that is needed for a safe surgery and experience. There xray department was also very nice and the staff was very friendly.

I had a private room and since the hospital is not that large when i rang for the nurse she was there within a minute or 2....not the 15 to 20 that we are accustomed to here in most of our hospitals.

If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask. Also I have pictures of the Hotel Pueblo Amigo on my picture page.

Just wanted to give you an updated. So I decided to cancel my surgery date w/ A Lighter Me...I was scheduled w/ Dr. Garcia as you know already. Let me tell you..the people at A Lighter Me are professionals. Ms. Sandy Johnston is a classy lady and I believe she is passionate about helping people. I don't think it is all about profit for her. They refunded all my money including the 3% processing fee back to my card within an hour or so. I was just blown away by how nice and caring they were. She even called to follow up with me after I cancelled! We all know most businesses don't do that. If anyone is not sure about Dr. Garcia and/or A Lighter Me...Pls do not have any doubts. Those people are there to help. And no I am not being paid by anyone lol...

My husband, sister and co-workers have staged an "intervention" and want me to try working out and have forced me to cancel. I honestly know how it'll go but will give it a chance.

Oh wow jeweladdo. I feel bad that they were not supportive of your decision to have surgery.

As far as going to Dr. Garcia on Jan 30th, I am glad to see positive experiences like this one. I am excited and nervous at the same time.

Sorry they did this. If you are obsese enough to qualify for WLS then I hate to break it to you, but the success rate of those who do the diet/exercise/will power route is barely 3%, depending on what stats you look at. Reseach has proven that we cannot treat this disease by will power alone, and diets don't work. Good luck to you, dear.

awww man @jewel that sucks! I can totally understand though. As an african american we usually dont agree with going under the knife if you dont have to! If I do it, I wouldnt really want to tell my family until after!

Hi Chyna, Yes. It really does suck. I have told a bunch of co-workers too and only one lady Robin (she is super cool) has not passed judgment .There is another co-worker who is just too awesome. She has been my motivator and mentor giving me food recipes and mini counseling sessions to face the main reason why I overeat. And I believe my answer came today during one of those talks.

I don't blame you for not wanting to tell your family till after. They just make the process harder because they do not provide the emotional support...in my case anyways. Best of luck to you Chyna. I am still going for the surgery though. Mar 29th..Star Medica :)

So you're still going for it! Yay. I talked to a coordinator today and was told Dr. Garcia has days open in mid March. And I Only told one of my coworkers. Shes cool and a big girl as well so she gets it. I wouldnt dare tell by boss the truth. She would announce it at our weekly staff meeting! Dont want any negative energy anway. Did you book your flight? Still going with Dr. Garcia?

I am actually going to Dr. Jose Rodriguez bin Juarez, mexico at Star Medica at the end of March. I have heard nothing but positive things about Dr. Garcia though.

@jewel Did you tell your family you were going down to do it anyway yet? I would keep my mouth closed until I came back! And may I ask why you changed docs?

@rahnava I would love to speak with you if possible about your experience with Dr.Garcia!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
