Are we prone to Sharting after Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was reading something on another forum where a lady was asking about all the things to expect from vsg. She mentioned "sharting" and said this:

"we may be prone to "sharting" after the surgery? (Um, for those who don't know, sharting is when you fart, but you actually do more than fart...)"

what the heck?? I've never heard this before. Is there truth to it?

I'm embarassed to admit, but yes, this has happened to me. Only once, but that was one time to many. :-) I think it was just my body getting used to having liquid only.

lol i dont think this is a problem with just the sleeve.. its a combo of loose stools and extra amount of gas..

If you have never in your life heard of it then maybe you should be fine :-)

It's easy to manage. Just don't fart unless you're sitting on a toilet. Ever since had a small bowel resection 15 years ago, farting isn't safe. You just don't always know what you're going to get.blush5.gif

I've heard of accidents when you're sick or something. I haven't been sleeved yet so no, I hadn't heard of sharting before for no good reason..lol I'm trying to understand why sleeved people have this problem? But yall say it is temporary? Or did anyone say that? ciappa.gif

Sadly, at 6 days out this has been a concern for me. I've thankfully not had it happen- but only by seconds! I imagine it has to do with the fact that I'm on a liquid diet still. I dont expect it will be an issue once I start getting actualy foods in me again.

Lol! I'm only laughing because it did happen to me. Only once though the 2nd day after my surgery. I was still in the hospital so my fiance gave me a one time use only pass. But after that I didn't have any more problems. I think it was just a mixture of all that gas plus all the fluids being pumped in me. Good luck to you tho!

The only times I've been worried about it is when I've had way too much coffee in a day or have gotten into something sugar free. It's not different than before surgery for me though - your stomach will let you know it's not happy (or at least mine does)

In the first day after my op, and after the various fluids I drank to test the staple line, I absolutely did shart myself. Once. And standing in the privacy of my own shower room.

The nurses, old hands with the newly sleeved, had prepared me for the possibility and explained it was the ikky stuff you have to drink for the post-op tests that do it. Apparently, few are immune.

For the liquid stage, consider, too, that what goes in is exactly what comes out - liquid stuff. It's not for long, and many aren't as hershey-squirty as I was. For about three weeks, it was just good pre-planning - I just made sure I had a darn good idea of where the restrooms were whenever I went out of the house lol.

From my experience so far (sleeved mid-September), once you're on semi-solids & solids again, everything rights itself. I'm generally a much better burper than farter, but I AM confident it's just wind that's being generated back there!

It happened to me twice, shortly after returning home from the hospital. As described above, it is a result of a liquid diet and excess gas. Not something you have to contend with for the rest of your sleeved life.

I read someone's list of things you need to know after surgery and number 8 on the list was ... in the first week never trust a fart.

Haha this made me laugh! It's so true! I think something else that is worth mentioning in this thread is that when you feel like you have to go, YOU HAVE TO GO! There is no holding onto liquid, it can just sort of seep out! Also- at least for me- your intestines will sort of gurgle and let you know what's about to happen. For me it feels different then the gas from a fart moving.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
