i noticed a few people saying they hate the taste of Water after they have their sleeve. okay this is me, i have a 2.2 litre water bottle (74.4 oz) and i drink about two or three of those a day. i have been checked for diabetes and i have great blood sugars, so my doctor thinks i'm just kind of addicted to drinking water (who would think that was possible). after i have my surgery will i not be able to drink that much water anymore? will it interfere with my eating by making me full? is it going to hurt me to still drink so much or help me? i'm just wondering if i should try to cut back to a 'normal' amount in the couple of months pre surgery, which would be hellish, seriously.

Water made me naseous at first, but I can drink it now. You do drink a lot of water! You certainly won't be able to drink that much after surgery. You won't be able to drink with meals either, so you can have room for your food.< /p>

After first it will be hard to drink even 8oz in a hour. Eventually when you are healed you can drink as before except with meals . (I do and have since 2 months out)

I've always liked H20, sometimes I just don't drink enough. Why is it exactly that you can only sip very slowly for a time after surgery? Will it hurt my stomach to drink too quickly? When will this change.

For me it doesn't hurt-but it makes me nauseous. I am so used to taking-not gulps, but more than sips-of Water that I 'forget" until it hits my new stomach and makes me feel yucky for a while.

Hard for me to get in enough Water without taking regular size drinks. But I know that some people are actually physically incapable of swallowing anything more than a sip after their surgery.

Not drinking when I eat is very hard for me. I have to put my water where I can't even reach it-so I don't just grab for it out of habit.

i can imagine.

hey i read somewhere (can't remember) that you can't use a straw because of air bubbles? is that true and if it is, is it just after surgery or what?

do most of you add flavor to your Water? is it less nauseating to eat ice chips for a while (doing mental math in my head how many ice cubes equal a cup of water... )

some people say they were told not to use straws. When I was sleeved, my stuff came with straws. I use a straw all the time, and I know I drink more when I use a straw.

I've heard the PH of Water does not agree with our new tiny tummies . You may have to experiment with bottled Water and see if one agrees with you more.

I was a big Water drinker prior to surgery too (over 100 ozs a day). I struggle to get 32 ounces a day in now and I should be getting at least 64! I'm hoping this will improve the further out I get.

After surgery Water felt like hot lead in my belly and sipping was a struggle because it was so uncomfortable going down. That first week was NOT easy. I drank G2 so that I was getting electrolytes and not dehydrating. I'm 8 weeks out now and while a can't guzzle, I can drink a little more normally. However, sometimes it just doesn't feel good.

Not drinking at meals is sooo important, but soooooooooo hard! The fluids flush food through your sleeve faster which keeps you from feeling full longer. Stop drinking 15-30 minutes before you are going to eat and don't drink until 30 minutes after. This alone will cut down on the amount of fluids you are taking in drastically because it will take you 30 minutes to eat! So for 1 1/2 hours at eat "feeding" I'm not drinking....and I'm supposed to be eating 6 times a day!

Good luck on your journey!

well if this is the case i'm gonna buy myself some FIJI Water after surgery. i love that stuff it's soooo good but too expensive right now because of the amount i usually drink. have you guys ever had that Water? it's elite stuff.

i drink tap water right now which is rather sketchy to me, you can taste the chemicals in it. i can totally see me getting yucked out about having to drink it after surgery if it has to be room temperature or something because it's already unpalatable. all that chlorine and stuff probably wont agree with tummy.

I love Water, but sometimes it get hard or boring, so I use Ocean Spray Cran- Pomegranate. It's sugar free & I freeze it until it gets slushy. Sooooooo good! Crystal Light is good for flavor too!

I was a 120 oz/day Water drinker. More on gym days. Post surgery, I struggle to get 64 oz ... even on gym days. For me, it does taste different at almost 5 mos post-op.

Here is my 2 cents:

Don't start reducing your Water intake pre-op. It makes no sense to wean yourself off of it. Your body may not react the same. You may do fine.

Experiment with the straw. For me, I found I took in less air with it, but I can see where some people would take in more. See what works for you post-op.

Experiment with the temperature of the water. Post-op, your stomach may be very swollen and restricted. I found drinking room temp water easier. Perhaps the cold water 'shocked' the swollen stomach ... don't know. I was drinking about 20 oz of water on a good day for the first week, but I kept trying.

Gatorade, Poweraid, blah blah blah-aid. Whatever flavored water or additive works well for me. Don't know why it makes it easier to drink the liquid, but it does for me.

totally derailing this thread but,

oh wow you know, i was thinking this morning, when you get your sleeve, and you have to focus on your Protein, then your veggies and how so many of you hardly eat bread or sugar anymore. That must really help those of you with allergies to certain foods, candida problems or even gluten intolerance you might never knew you had, till you stopped eating it and felt so much better, ON TOP of the weight loss.

and you must know what doesn't agree with you so much more easily as you are much more in tune with what you are putting into your mouth now. how excellent!

i'm going to look up some flavor packs to add to Water. maybe with stevia in them. oh! does anyone ever drink coconut Water drinks?

I've never even heard of coconut Water. I've seen coconut milk in the stores though.

You have the right idea with the Fiji Water. After surgery you need to experiment with different bottled water. The PH is different in all of them. I find it much easier to drink

room temp, even this far out at 2 1/2 years. I could drink all the water I want now though. It's only in the beginning that it's hard to drink very much at once.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
