A diet before the liquid diet--I'm angry!

Recommended Posts

Hello sleevers. I am a 35 BMI with hypertension. I've spent my life dieting (losing and then gaining more). I consider myself a dieting expert. The problem is I just gain it all back later. I am sure many of you are like me. So now I am 4 months out before I start my pysch eval and cardio workup. My doc says he wants me to lose weight now, during this 4-month period. I wil be doing a liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery next year as well. My doc says he wants me to show the bariatric team I can make changes. I wanted to scream. I've spend my life doing this, doc. So now I'm going to diet again, only to do the two week liquid diet before surgery? I totally understand the liquid diet--it's a safety issue. As for the losing weight now, on a diet, I feel like it is punishment. I feel punished for being fat. I was surprised at how it made me feel. I can understand not gaining weight, but full-fledged dieting right now? GRRRRRRR....

Please don't chastise me that I'm going to need to make changes and be disciplined after the surgery--I get that and am all for it. I've been doing it all of my life without the tool of the surgery, so I'll be fine with it. I am just emotionally drained with dieting and the scale right now! Did anyone else feel this way? Bottom line: I'll lose weight and follow the rules. I just need to move past my diet burnout stage.

TDSK, many people have to do some dieting to satisfy insurance requirements. Once I decided to get the surgery I committed to changing my behavior to maximize my health before surgery and my chances of success with the weight loss. I stopped drinking with meals, dropped soda and caffine, and practiced taking in liquids and eating slowly. The difference with this diet for me was that I knew it wouldn't be coming back. Remember that the sleeve is a tool to help you but you still need the discipline to stick to a program to get the weight off and keep it off long term. Take this opportunity to prepare and kiss those pounds good bye.... and cheat once in a while just for fun. :)

So, I had to do the same thing, not as long as you and I was still so pissed off. I had my consultation on Sept 26 and my doc told me then that I had to start my pre-op liquid diet then. I am like you're joking right.? I mean seriously why should I have to do that.?

I am having surgery on November 30th so I have only been at this for two months. Now you may not want to hear this but I am going to tell you anyways. I have learned a lot on this diet for two months. It has been a time for me to practice being sleeved without actually being sleeved. I was able to fall off the wagon and not be completely ill, or hurt my new stomach.

It's sucks that we have to prove anything to anybody, but why shouldn't we have to. In reality we are the ones who made ourselves fat. The doc and the insurance companies are about to spend a lot of time and money on you and they want to make sure you can actually succeed. I don't see what's wrong with that. Hold your head up high and take this time to find yourself. To learn some new things about yourself.

Many people have to lose weight for insurance purposes, be happy you aren't in that boat.

I felt the same way you did at first, but I am glad they did it. I cut out soda, I cut out sweets, I cut out Snacks. They good thing was because I had some time beforehand I was able to cut things down slowly, versus doing it all at once and having caffeine headaches and starving to death. Plus I have learned my food-triggers and I have learned when the worst times for me to snack are. You will learn all of these things about yourself, if you haven't already and will be better prepared for the surgery and what lies after that.

Try and stay positive, with your mind on your diet everyday the time will fly by. Chin up! Good Luck!

I completely understand the frustration. You are not alone. I was told that I would need to lose 15 lbs to be scheduled for surgery. When I started the process I weighed 234. My pcp told me I would have to lose weight. So by the time I saw the surgeon I weighed 229. Now I am being told that I need to weigh 214 at my pre op appt on Dec 6th. I have lost 15lbs (as far as I am concerned I weigh 216). But I am being told that the surgeon is going to go by the weight of 229 so I need to weigh 214 when I see him. I am hoping that I can lose and maintain the additional few pounds especially because the holidays are right around the corner. I think they should count my beginning weight of 234! I mean good grief I did lose the weight. But we shall see! If anything, I am going to have to be my own best advocate and tell my doctor as much.

I literally feel like this process is taking FOREVER! I am supposed to call my surgeons office tomorrow to get a tentative surgery date. I have come so far so I am going to make sure I do nothing to mess it up.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey. I know how frustrating dieting is. But just think of it this way, This diet is a SURE thing! How many diets have you ever been on that could guarantee that?!

I have to agree eith you . Feels like you are being punished .I am lucky to have a good insurance and a few surgeons of excellence within driving distance.... I would switch surgeons. I'm drastic I know, but I'm at the hospital right now (bmi 40) and I didn't have to do pre-op diet. Many don't have to. I did lose 1 pound per week for 2 months to appease the insurance company. That was easy.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree. I would probably change doctors too unless it's an insurance snag then you may not be able to get around it. I didn't have to do a pre op diet at all. All I had to do was the "diet" the day before surgery that came with my bottle of liquid hell (magnesium citrate BLEH). I think my doctor recognized that if I could successfully diet, I wouldn't be in his office in the first place. I DID gain during my months leading up to my surgery because he wanted me to quit smoking. He never mentioned one word of it and my bmi was VERY high. TDSK, for your bmi not being high, only in the 30's, that sounds a bit ridiculous to me but what do I know? Probably a dumb question, but did you question why a pre-op diet for THAT length of time?

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
