Ok I'm almost three weeks out and I am getting the hiccups all the time! I get them after I eat (10-20 min) after I take a drink even when I wake up in the morning! Anyone else have this problem and if so do you know why?

Hiccups tell me that my sleeve is full. It how I know not to over eat my sleeve and feel crappy. Once a hiccup comes during a meal I am done.

Just to give you a mental picture. There is a point in your esophagus that it kinda splits off. The esophagus goes to the stomach and the trachea goes to the lungs. There is a little flap over the top of the trachea that prevents food from going into the lungs. When something gets stuck on the top of the flap your body hiccups to get it off the flap so you can breathe normally again. Think of it as air pushing up the lid so it can open.

When my sleeve is full it backs up into my esophagus and hinders the trachea until my sleeve digests some of the food below it.

Kinda weird but hey at least I have a clue now. My stomach was never full with clues before VSG!

Yeah but is it normal to get them 10-20 min after I eat? I only ask because I still haven't figured out how I'm full, granted I have never gotten sick so maybe I haven't gotten there yet?

To get rid of them there is a pressur point right between your eyes just above your nose.

If you put pressure there they will go away.

Just an FYI.

My fiance just had his VSG yesterday. He has had the hiccups really bad and at first it was happening when he started sipping his cold Water. Through out the day he keeps getting them out of no where. I hope they stop, he says they are kind of painful and come with a burp every few hiccups. The nurse changed him over to tap water and they are now a little less than before but still there. He hasn't had anything but water because of the ugly feeling with the hiccups. confused5.gif

This is what Dr. Alvarez said on another forum about hiccups.

"Not everyone gets hiccups after surgery but the people who do, it is normally a sign they are full or almost full. Some people get hiccups right immediately after surgery as a sign that the sleeve and tissues are swollen and then subside. People who get the hiccups after the initial postop phase is normally related to the irritation of the phrenic nerve that is very close to the esophagus or to the GE junction. I tell my patients who do get it to use it as a signal of fullness and stop eating. I hope this explanation helps a bit. I tried to put it in a not-too-cietific way.

Congratulations to everyone with their sleeves!

Dr. Alvarez"

My "full" signal used to be a runny nose. Weird, huh? Now I just get the runny nose when I'm eating something really spicy. My signal now is a hiccup. It's usually just one and means STOP. When I get them 10-20 minutes after a meal, I think they are just "normal" hiccups because they keep on for a while.

Good morning Sleevers!

I have been getting hiccups as well. Out of the blue, for no apparent reason. I had them this morning when I woke up, before I ate anything. I also had them last night when I woke up in the middle of the night.

I have no idea what they are so I am going to call my surgeons office today.

Anyone know what this could be? If I get an answer, I'll post it.

I am 3 weeks post op and have trouble with just about anything I eat and I can only do about 2 bits or sips and here comes the hiccups. I know just 2 small tiny bits can't be filling me up. Just aggravating and I'm getting frustrated!

I still get bad bouts of them. Sometimes they last for an hour. I tried everything to get rid of them, I'm not sure why I get them.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
